The Control Panel Add\Remove list shows
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v.1.3.1_02 (21Mb)
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v.1.4.2_03 (107Mb)
Java 2 Runtime Environment. SE v.1.4.2_05 (108Mb)

I went to www.java.com, which scanned my system and indicated that I
had the latest verson (1.4.2_05), but I wondered if I should uninstall
the earlier versions. I had assumed they were cumulative.

There isn't a problem of which I'm aware, and I'd rather not cause any
by unwise cleaning, but that's a whole lot of space being used. FWIW I
installed SP2 recently.
Thank you.

You could safely remove the first two.

My HP1300 printer install software is supposed to check the system for any
existing Java RE, but installs v.1.3.1 regardless.

I'm using v.1.5.0 JRE with my browsers, available
