I've always pictured AMD as not for sale, especially these days now that they're extremely competitive with Intel in just about everything and their future is looking as bright as ever.

Which is why their stock price is in the shiitter just before they launch Barcelona

Hint: Stocks are priced 6-18 months ahead ... investors dont think much of AMDs outlook until at least end 2008.

Investors don't know as much as they think they do. AMD is / will remain to be competitive.

Hint: Tech market stocks are particularly volatile.

Heh, not that it would happen, but if Microsoft bought AMD, wouldn't it be great to see Windows only work on proprietary MS platforms!

The very FIRST thing MS would do is make sure Windows ONLY ran on MS-AMD chips

Intel would bankrupt in 6 months ...

Why are we posting articles on stuff that may happen? This is just an analyst's thoughts and there is absolutely nothing to justify it. This is a non story.

Here is my list of things that may happen in the world of CPUs:
1. Intel may buy Nvidia
2. Intel may buy AMD
3. AMD may release a CPU that outperforms C2D
4. R600 may outperform 8800 GPUs
5. AMD may sell off ATI

All of these things may happen, but than again they may not. Stories of things that may happen are not news. It's news when it happens or at least when there is a statement released by one of the parties involved.

Smart people who are concerned about the ENTIRE industry and neither CPU company knows AMD is the little engine that could.
I personally benefit from Intel doing well. My post does not root for the demise of AMD, it was an "I told you this might happen" to the AMD fanboys that argued with me 4 months ago.

How do YOU personally benefit? Are you a stockholder?

Lets just say that in your world I would wear white plastic body armour and would run the risk of Paul Otellini choking me with the force if I told him that AMD is gaining market share.

In my world, you..... never mind. I take that to mean you are a peasant in the Empire. Maybe you can ask your bosses where they get the crack that told them to charge $183 for a chip that KILLS their own Extreme Edition 965.

Here, lay down on this couch, now tell me why you can not come to grips with AMD falling behind in CPU technology? Perhaps you were molested by a blue man when you were younger or were tormented by the dropped "e" that would never fall?

A private equity group would not be that bad for owning AMD. I think they should focus on one or two products instead of spreading out their arms like they have been doing.

Ahlons ruled for 3 years with the crow. Intel has the crow for about 8 months now. Lets waith and see the new AMD product, maibe more 3 years in the top?

Its easy say that a company has a product better than a 3 years old tecnology.

Lets wait and see.

What does Intel ripping of people with NetBurst have to do with me or AMD?

AMD is well ahead in CPU tech as they have a most more robst infrastructure with much better upgrade paths. If they were behind they wouldn't own TPC-H for non clustered servers.

The question should be why your bosses can't make two chips use the same mobo/chipset.

If Intel buys NVidia then we might see 45 nm technology used in whatever comes after 8950 GX2. If NVidia doesn't have to reinvent all this then we may get the goodies faster and cheaper. No complaints there... However, I don't see what Intel stands to gain from this deal.

Microsoft could use somebody like AMD/ATI to develop their proprietary microprocessor that understands .Net bytecodes (MSIL) natively. They discussed this idea a couple of years ago and I think it's pretty good, except that the computers based on it would either run only .Net apps or they would require an 80x86 compatible processor too.

AMD/ATI outperforming C2D and 8800 - please let it happen... And then please let Intel and NVidia outperform these outperformers 3 months later, and so on. That's how things advance fastest, when everybody takes turns in the lead. The last thing I'd like to see is a complacent and unmotivated monopoly.

I am not a little white kid.

Edit:

I meant "whining."

Ouch, sounds like somebody got Pwn'd by a noob using Intel Core 2 Duo technology. 8O

AMD lost money that they will regain by now being a producer of chipsets, cpus AND video cards. Something Intel hasn't even done (although it appears they are gearing up for it again... smart move.) since the late 90s with the i7xx video card series (solid cards for the time, shame they stopped.)
Every time someone buy something with an integrated ATI chipset or processor (which is a ton of laptops and desktops, not to mention macs) AMD builds itself up.
Yes Intel's C2Ds are better than AMD's desktop offereings.
Yes AMD's hurting some because of stockholder panic. But since when does faster chips doesn't mean that AMD is "done for" like I keep hearing.
If that were the case VIA would be well out of business.
SiS wouldn't exist.
FACT is AMD is, and has been, focusing on the very lucrative business sector and thus allowing the consumer sector to lag behind technologically, in something that they couldn't compete in for production anyway. What I mean here is, even if AMD (and who knows, maybe they do) had a badass chip for us Ubar-gamers they couldn't produce them while concentrating on business AND ATI at the same time... yet.
Intel, however can.
Unlike Intel they don't have nearly the production capacity to focus everywhere... so blows will be traded for a while and Intel will be ahead probably more often than not.

So what?

Intel was the king since the 80s and all AMD did was grow anyway.
Something along the line of 90% or more of computers sold are NOT Macs but Apple gets along just fine.
Being 2nd does not mean gone, nor does it mean it has to stay that way.

AMD slung a huge stone into Intel's eye and staggered them enough to suck up an unforgettable portion of their marketshare. AMD has already done what it wanted to do in a relatively short amount of time. They aren't going away just because Intel has better 32-bit desktop processors just yet.
Why does the AMD and ATI merger do anything else but make sense?
It takes money to make money.

Every day that someone buys an ATI card or ATI item, let alone AMD is yet another dollar that Intel gets. AMD floats until their next major cpu launch for business (and if you privy to embedded roadmaps you would see they are far from dead) get some cash, and voila they are just fine again.

I'm not saying AMD isn't interested in beating Intel, of course they are, but they don't have to to "stay alive."

getting bought out by a PE firm doesn't mean the company would fold, they would just be owned by a new group. It could be a good thing. Most of those PE firms will really shake up the management system and get things going straight because they want a quick profit. this could really help AMD

Excellent point... and could very well be true for AMD.

aj,

Please remember that EVERYTHING is for sale. In fact you may even hear rumors that it is indeed NOT for sale right up till the point that the deal goes through.

Please reference the buyout of Worldcom/MCI by Verizon...

And I'm sure that word gives you tingles, but why can't Intel keep the same socket for more than five minutes?

Cause intel improves their TECH faster than amd reason being amd is behind and by the time amd catches up Intel will have something new and better out.

Correct ... AMD shareholders are hurting badly ... anyone with deep enough pockets offering them a way to recoup (some) of their losses is going to garner their undivided attention.
