Advice needed

I would like to upgrade to a higher CPU for overclocking than what I have now. I would like to know what I should buy. I want to keep my
M/B Abit BH6 V1.01 SS-BIOS........
I currently am running a PII-300@504.....

Note that your memory is possibly of the 66Mhz calibre so you'd be limited to celerons going down that route. (Over clocking isn't very stable without at least good quality 100Mhz RAM anyway)

There's a lot of product info on your board on the Abit site which should give you an idea.

I don't really see how you can overclock without changing the board though. The highest celeron supported is 333Mhz and to overclock a PIII you'll need to go over 100Mhz BUS not supported by your board.

If I were you I'd get a cheap P3 550 and 128Mb RAM. That should run on your machine just fine. Though ABit says it can go as high as 700Mhz with a PIII I doubt it with that BX chipset under the bonnet. Even taking it to 600 would be risky in my book.

I have an Abit BH6 rev 1.01 running a Celeron 566 @ 850 (1.70 volts) on an Iwill Slotket II. The only requirement was an upgrade to the latest bios (QN). The latest stepping of the Celeron 566's and 600's are getting close to 1,000MHz so that would be the upgrade I would be looking at if I were you.

If you read the post you replied to you will note that he said he is running a PII300 @ 504 so he is using a 112MHz front side bus speed, it would have to be exceptional PC66 memory to run at that speed.

Another point is that you doubted the statement on Abit's site regarding the BH6 supporting up to a PIII 700 particularly because the board uses a BX chipset. Many people are running PIII's at 933MHz and above on BX boards so the chipset is hardly a limitation there.

Wow, I stand corrected. I wasn't sure what he meant by 504 when I saw it. I never knew that a PII 300 could be overclocked that severely.

I've fitted an ABit mainboard before that claimed to go as high as 800MHz which was of course BX. It failed to run at 733Mhz and barely got into Windows most of the time. The memory was good quality and tested fine @ 133Mhz.

Replaced the mainboard with a VIA chipset mainboard and it flew along with all other components. From that experience I've doubted the BX's ability to go that high. I guess it was just a faulty mainboard and nothing to do with the chipset.

On top of that I'm not very experienced with the world of overclocking, I've always avoided it.. thanks for the info

I ordered a new 600 cCO celeron and a Golden Orb today, I hope to be at 900+ soon...........

If you could explain the settings for a celeron I would appreciate it, since I have never been on that side of Intel.
