I have an old Toshiba 3.5" SATA drive, specifically this one, that I'd like to recover data from using some form of a USB adapter. I'm seeing conflicting information on whether or not this drive would need external power (unlike most 2.5" drives). Can anyone confirm whether it would and maybe offer a recommendation on a suitable product?

Any drive needs to have both a data and power connection. For 3.5 inch drives, a USB port simply can't be sure to provide sufficient power to spin up the disk, even if there's only one platter. Some USB ports provide more power than the official spec, while others don't, but a USB to SATA adapter most likely won't even attempt to draw more than the official spec because that could blow out a USB port that follows the spec. An adapter on a USB 3.0 port can usually power a 2.5 inch mechanical drive with only one platter, but if it's an older drive or has multiple platters, or you use a USB 2.0 port, even that might need additional power which is why some adapters include a Y cable so you can draw power from a second USB port. You need an adapter that includes a power brick or a Y cable (and the Y cable has to plug into two different root hubs to get additional power).

This one provides every possible consumer drive connection used in the last 35 years except M.2. (Most adapters that only support SATA also don't take external power so they only work for 2.5 inch drives. If they do take external power, they end up costing only slightly less than this one while only supporting SATA.)

"Toshiba DT01ACA050 500 GB 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive 500" is the description for a 3.5" model which requires both 5V and 12V supplies. However, the photo shows an MQ01ABF050H which is a 2.5" model which requires only 5V.
