I am looking at building a NAS. Here is what I have up to date: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Pw9h4q

This is my first ever build, so I wanted to get some feedback to get it right. This NAS would only be for file storage (backups from my laptop, pictures, etc.). Nothing fancy like video streaming. Also, because I will be sleeping in the same room as this device, it needs to be quiet. Regarding the budget, I don't really want to go higher than this (500 $ CAD). If I could get 100 $ CAD off what I have currently, this would be great. Also, I am thinking of running FreeNAS on this thing.

A 2 x 4GB set or memory would be better than a single DIMM.

There are "embedded" motherboards like this -- https://www.newegg.com/asrock-j4105-itx-mini-itx/p/N82E16813157806?Item=9SIAH419G25968 that don't require a CPU cooling fan.
Thanks, I will look into these embedded motherboard. Also, I went with the one stick option so I could easily upgrade to 16 GB in the future. Is the difference between one stick and two stick that big?

Also, could you give me some advice on the PSU? From what I understand, the 550 W PSU I have currently is probably overkill for my build. Would you have a recommendation to make for a 300W-400W PSU which is relatively silent?

Thinking that you can add 8GB in the future is "maybe" at best. Mix and match RAM is a gamble. Even the two of the "same" model may not play together. That is why they sell matched sets. They are guaranteed to work as a set.

Ok, thanks for the advice, I guess I will get two RAM sticks. Would you have any advice for the power supply?
