Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and motherboard, currently I'm running a i5-4460 and an EVGA 750ti but have just been given a Gigabyte 1060 G1 6GB.

I'm just wondering if a i3-12100F would be ok to run with the 1060 or would the 1060 bottleneck the i3? I'm also looking at the i3-10105F.

I know the 1060 quite old now but I'm not really looking to buy a newer GPU at this moment in time.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Whic psu exactly? It's not about the 550watt, but about quality. Maybe there are better options for the same price or not alot more.
It the same one that I've been using for years now. I've just checked and it a 520 not 550! 🤦‍♂️It's a seasonic s12 2 series 80 plus bronze.

With the newer parts might there be problems with sleep states and age is a thing as well. Would myself retire it. You could see if it will work, it won't do harm to the system i think, protection features are fine,it was a decent psu in it's time. Would disable sleep states C6/7 and up in the bios to be sure.

Ah ok, thanks for your help so far. Sorry to be a pain but what PSU would you recommend?

If you are wanting a cheap power supply that is still pretty good, the Corsair CV 650W is okay. For a little more:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/8PJtt6/evga-supernova-g1-650w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-120-gp-0650-x1

If you want a PSU that will last you a good while and support you for future upgrades you would be looking at $100 to $120 for something like a Corsair RM850x or RM750x or an EVGA G3 850W.
What is your budget?
Also where do you live? Any specific shop you look?

I wouldn't pair a CV650 with such parts btw, usuallly with that one you get into the territory of better quality psu's.
Thanks again for the replies, I'm from the UK and only looking for something as low priced as possible. £50-£60

I've just looked at the CV 650 on Amazon and can get if for £49 atm, but not too sure now.

Note that your GTX 1060 is not going to bottleneck nothing, is a CPU the component that can bottleneck a GPU. And the i3 12100F is not going to bottleneck the GTX 1060.

But maybe you can go to a cheaper CPU/Mobo combination as the 10400F/H410M.

For the cheapest possible 12th gen, the 12100 is an awesome deal. With limitations. For the price difference, the 12400 is a much better value overall, not necessarily in the initial price. Most ppl worry about upgrade ability, and then never upgrade, keeping the cpu for 4-5 years then getting a whole new cpu/mobo. So it's generally better to get something that's going to last the 4-5 years and not see real drops in performance due to software advances.

The 12th gen/ 1060 isnt a bottleneck issue. In some things the cpu will be limited, in some the gpu limited, that's the nature of software, especially games at 1080p.
