I do compute research (pytorch and tensorflow) and 3D modeling, and really need at least a better GPU. If I have a plain EVGA 1080, I should be able to support a EVGA 3090 right? A coworker offered a sealed EVGA 3090 FTW Ultra Gaming for $2K next week. Or is it a waste in this computer as it is now? I don't have a lot of money, but I do need a better machine for work / grad school, and I've been saving up to upgrade since the 1080 was new.

I have a computer that is roughly https://pcbuilder.net/rigs/kOqMiZ/

  1. CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K
  2. Mobo: MSI Z370A-Pro (Not Gigibyte)
  3. GPU: 1080 (not TI)
  4. RAM: 2x8Gb at 2400MHz
  5. Cooling is air + fans (doesn't seem to get too hot)

How can I most efficiently / least expensively upgrade what I have?
