Hi ya all.
My name is Jay, i'm looking for an advice to upgrade my work desktop pc. Thanksgiving is coming and i want to take advantage of the sale and upgrade my pc.
I built it myself few years ago with specs below.
CPU Socket Type: AM4 board MSI MPG X570
CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor 3.60 GHz
Ram 32.0 GB
GPU 1080 Ti
My computer works fine but when i load lots more of application from my trading software it kind of laggy and slow. I want to upgrade the performance of my pc but not sure i should upgrade the Ram or GPU.
Can you guys please give me an advice? Thanks alot.

i have trading software like Thinkofwim and Sierra charts and i'm not sure if they use Ram or GPU or CPU, is there a way to tell? or do i have to contact their technical department?

You can open up task manager when its slowing down, and see what your CPU, Disk, and RAM usage is under the performance tab. That should give you some idea of whats causing the bottleneck, I would bet on it being RAM though, especially if your company has a lot of corporate apps running in the background.

From Thinkorswim,
"- Thinkorswim is a single-threaded application. It requires a processor that can push the computational limits so that real-time data is processed and displayed on the chart as quickly as possible.

- ThinkorSwim needs a minimum of 16GB of RAM to handle the ThinkorSwim platform and multiple charts.

- Because ThinkorSwim is one of the few trading platforms that utilize your graphics card for data crunching, integrated graphics won't suffice in most cases."

From Sierra Charts,

"The following hardware specifications, are very much recommended for a fast system: 16 GB RAM, minimum of 4 core CPU, and a SSD (solid-state drive). The more CPU cores and memory you have, generally will be beneficial.

A dedicated solid-state drive with just Sierra Chart installed to it is strongly recommended."

I would recommend getting new parts based on the amounts of usage of each. Which program do you use more, or open more stuff in?

Thanks for all the recommendation guys. Per your instruction thru the task manager i see that Thinkofswim is using quite a lot of CPU and Ram and sierra chart is very light.
I usually run Thinkofswim and sierra chart at same time ( no gaming ). What would you recommend for an upgrade to boost overal performance, so it can run a little smoother when i do multitasking with google chrome too.
Thanks again.

I would get either 64 or 128 gb of RAM, a faster higher threaded CPU, and a higher VRAM / faster GPU. All of the GPU options are on the following build list. If you just want a faster CPU with no additional cores the 5700x can save you ~130 dollars. If you want a new platform an Intel CPU, Motherboard, and DDR5 RAM, can also be done. The new platform, potentially minus the GPU, would be faster overall by a decent chunk.
