Question Advice regarding intermittent download speed

Hi all,

I recently got Full Fibre 500 installed at my property and since the install last week I have been receiving intermittent download speeds. Typically it will either be what I'm paying for which is 500 mbps or I receive around 90 mbps, just to give a background of the connection to my desktop I have the main gateway router inside my property and then I have an office in my garden where I have a wired extension into a port inside it. I was initially worried about could be the cable running to my office but the fact I receive the correct speed at certain times just baffles me, I'd expect it to work or not work. Does anyone have any advice on this or experience with similar issues? I have been in constant contact with my ISP who just tend to follow the same script each time and have even offered me a third Amazon Eero router (when the second hasn't improved things) so kind of stuck with what to do.

The Amazon Eero app suggests I'm getting the full speed directly to the gateway as it always if the issue is present or not, after adding my second router it does say "Connected to "Office" (100 mbps, Port 2)" which is the speed I'm currently getting. However as mentioned this isn't always the case, the past two days I was monitoring and the speed was 500 mbps as it should be but now it seems to have reverted again.

What I've tried already:

- Switching out the CAT5e / CAT6 cables connecting to the router and my desktop
- Adjusting the Speed & Duplex to 1 Gbps Full Duplex in the network adapter settings
- ISP sent me another Amazon Eero router and I added that to the chain, directly connecting it to my router but it made no difference
- Reset the Amazon Eero router multiple times

90mbps or more likely 94mbps almost always means some cable is running at 100mbps. There is a bit of overhead that is used in the packets to hold the mac addresses which is why you get rates like that and not the full 100mbps.

Hard to say it can be any cable in the path. It is not uncommon. I had one that the slightest vibration would cause it to move just a bit in the socket and change between 1gbit and 100mbps. Just happened to see the lights on a switch change made me notice it.
