Hi, I am using 1TB Seagate Expansion external drive, with external power cable. I was using this with no problem, but about 3 months back, the problem started "when I connect the HD to my laptop, green light starts glowing continuously in the HD, and If I touch it, I can feel its spinning, but when I open computer menu, it shows the external hd has local disk, but it has no info about the storage space left on it like the other drives in computer menu, and the green bar at the top loads endlessly.

In Device Manager, it shows up and I updated the drive and it said I already had the latest driver.

When I tried to uninstall through Device Manager, once again, it gets hung up on the uninstall endlessly.

When I go to computer management and click on disk management, there is nothing in the menu, but at the bottom, it says "connecting to virtual disk service...." endlessly.

when I unplug the drive, I have no problems In opening disk management.
I am using windows 8, I tried it in my friends laptop which has Windows 8.2, same problem , I changed the USB cable, from other HD, and I used my cable to other other disk, In other HD its fine, So I found there is no problem with my cable. I am using Seagate company provided adapter.

I thought, I could keep the HD ideal for some days and try it later, so, I kept it in shelf for about 3 months and I am using now, still same problem continuous, I am so tried of this, can anyone please help me in solving out the issue?
Thank you Arun kumar.

Hey doub. It seems like you've tried the basics. You could still try it with a different computer just to see if the same thing happens, although it seems like it would probably lead to the same results. Do you have any data you need recovered from the drive? If "yes", then I'd recommend that you try to access the drive via Linux Live USB/CD to see if it's recognized and if you can get your stuff out of it. If that doesn't work, you could try if it is recognized by some of the data recovery options, listed in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
If nothing else works for you and the drive is out of warranty (because the following procedure would probably void it) - you could try taking it out of the enclosure and connecting it directly to the motherboard to see if it works properly. Note that this is usually not recommended and it should be done only in cases where you've tried everything else. I'd still suggest that you contact the manufacturer's customer support for assistance before you try that.
If you get it to work I'd recommend that you backup all of your data ASAP and then download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test the drive and see what's the situation with it.

Hope that helps.

Try this...

1. At a command prompt enter services.msc

2. Scroll down to Virtual Disk

3. The Startup Type should indicate Manual or Disabled. If not...

4. If not, right-click on listing, select Properties, and change Startup type to Disabled

See if that resolves the problem.

Hi ArtPog,

I followed what you said,
In my startup it was indicating manual, I right clicked on it and changed it to Disabled,

After that I went to disk management It shows the following:
"Disk Management could not start Visual Disk Service (VDS) on 'my computer name'. This can happen if the remote computer does not support VDS, or if a connection cannot be established because it was blocked by windows firewall.

For additional information about diagnosing and correcting this problem, see Troubleshooting Disk Management in Disk Management Help."

Since I saw this I clicked "ok"

Nothing happened, but this time it shows "unable to connect to Virtual Disk Service", So, I went back to services and changed it to "Manual"
Now, I clicked Disk management under computer management It shows the same thing endless " Connecting to Virtual Disk Service..."

HI Boogieman_WD,

Thank you for your reply, can you please give the link where I post my questions to seagate technicians? I tried my self but couldn't find any. And the customer service is about 300 KM away from my place. :-(

Sorry it didn't work. It was kind of a "shot-in-the-dark". The fact that your VDS was set on Manual indicated that wasn't the problem.
In addition to the advice given to you by Boogieman you may want to do a Google search on "connecting to virtual disk service", Apparently your problem is not unique and you may find an answer there. Good luck.

I would imagine that when you open up their site, there should be a "contacts" button somewhere on the bottom of the page. Click it and you'll get a lot of options where you can post this question or how to contact them. :)
I'm sorry I can't give you a specific link.

Goto Administrative tools from control panel, scroll down to services, press enter key, scroll down to virtual disk, right click on it and select Properties set startup type to automatic press apply click start and your done. good luck

I would hope, that almost 4 years later, he's still not suffering through this problem.
