I had a virus on my new laptop that said, WHEA uncontrollable error that showed a blue screen with a sad face, and this virus automatically shut down and restarted my computer over and over. After going through several steps with HP support and the warranty company, we determined that nothing was wrong with hardware and a very bad virus had attacked my operating system (windows 8). I was sent 4 CDs to reinstall Windows 8, which I successfully completed. However, even after reinstalling windows 8, my laptop continues to show the same error (WHEA uncontrollable error). Anyone, please help! Thanks in advance.

Solution
WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR is not caused by a virus. It is a error generated directly by the CPU and passed to windows which just displays the bugcheck data if it can. Reinstalling windows will not help, it is going to be a hardware issue most often it will be resolved down to incorrect voltages being applied to the CPU.
Here are the main causes of this error:
- overclocking in BIOS with poor selection of proper voltages to the CPU. (unlikely cause in your case)
- failure in voltage regulator on the motherboard
- failure in voltage regulator on a power supply line in the power supply to the motherboard.
- overheating of a CPU, due to a CPU fan not...

- internal failure in the actual electronics of the CPU. (permanent)

You need to escalate this issue with your OEM. The only fix for this will be hardware replacement or maybe a change in a BIOS setting (if supported). If you are told this is a software issue, you will know you are just talking to the wrong person and I would ask to talk to a manager and ask for a senior tech support person.

options that would be acceptable (have a actual chance of success):
- update BIOS or set certain voltage settings in BIOS
- replace power supply
- replace motherboard
- replace CPU

Solution
Thank you so much Johnbl and AkshatG! I have not had the opportunity to do either, but I definitely plan on trying every option that you informed me of. I actually talked to a senior tech support and a manager on several occasions, and obviously neither knew what they were talking about. I will definitely be contacting them again after I have exhausted every measure, and I will keep you informed of my progress. Thanks again.
