I finally stopped being lazy a few days ago and caught up on updating my PC. I let Windows Update do its thing while I was out and came back to a freshly updated and restarted computer. No issues.

Later that evening, I got booted out of a fullscreen game I was playing and was greeted with:

update.exe - Application Error
The instruction at 0x74a3e5a8 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program

Since then, two times a day, I get an error like that. I've never had an issue like this before.

I took a screenshot of the task manager showing the processes that close out when I click OK on that dialog box:

I've already tried SFC /scannow. No issues found.

Windows 7 64-bit

Gigabyte Z77-DS3H

Yes, Avira has a problem with their updater, and they are aware and testing a fix in their beta version. So just wait for the next update to your program.

The error is actually harmless, it only indicates a failed update attempt. But if you are concerned about not having the latest virus dat files, you can open the Avira GUI, click on menu item "Update">"Start update" to get it going again.
