Hi,

I'm having the following issue:

After the latest forced Windows 10 update my laptop (ASUS G551JW) is only outputting sound through the speakers--when I plug in my headphones (any headphones), the Realtek HD Audiomanager pops up, asks me, if I plugged in headphones, and after confirming this the laptop speakers go mute but nothing comes out of the headphones. Headphones are also not listed as a sound device any more (see image).

I've (re)installed the latest Realtek drivers but the problem persists. I've also deleted the drivers and tried to use the Windows default drivers but that also didn't help. Rolling back to a previous driver or disabling and re-enabling the current one also didn't do anything, same with the Windows audio troubleshooter.

Thanks so much--any help is greatly appreciated.

Solution only for desktops with more than one sound line output :

Last update changes audio output jack assignments. So no more green to green or black to black.Switch line positions to the speaker by trial.

Hi,

I have the same problem as StefanSch.
I just installed Windows 10 updates on my laptop (ASUS G551JW) some hours ago. The headphones which were working correctly for years are currently not working. No headphnes show up in the Control Panel / Sound, nor in the "Volume Mixer" (only Speakers are available).
Tried to get varios Realtek High Definition Audio drivers, tried to fix the problem in Safe mode, etc, but nothing helps.

The headphones are working fine in other devices (cell phone, other laptop).

What was the solution for you guys?

if this is the same driver youve installed, ignore it. usually reinstalling devices would easily fix this problem.

you should also check on your BIOS version. and other controller/chipset drivers as well since they will affect all other hardware connected to the laptop. ASUS has also provided a tool to make it easy for you t update your BIOS.

you will need the asus live update so you will know if there is a new version needed for your laptop

Hi,

Thanks marksavio for answering. I misstyped my laptopts type, it is ASUS G551JM and not the JW.
However your answers helped me.

I checked with Asus Live Update and there was nothing to be updated.
But when I checked, there was a new BIOS version on assus support page (205, https://www.asus.com/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG-G551JM/HelpDesk_BIOS/). I was using version 204.

After updating the bios, the headphones work fine with Realtek High Definition Audio 6.0.1.7571.
(To G55JM there is no win 10 64 bit Audio driver on the asus driver page. When I selected win 8 64 bit, I could download V6.0.1.7393 which after installing somehow upgraded to 6.0.1.7571.)

I had a similar problem after the later update - I plugged in the headphones and the rear speaker output (to sound bar) disappeared.

The answer was that some how in the Realtek HD Audio Manager the setting under Device Advanced Setting had been changed from "make the front and rear play two different audio streams simultaneously" to "mute the rear device when the headphone is plugged in". Changing it back reinstated things and the headphones reappeared in the playback tab of the sound menu, although navigation to this has been changed by MS as well :-(

Open Realtek Audio Manager. On the right side there is "Connector Settings", a small "Folder like" yellow icon. Try to disable or enable front panel jack detection.

Same thing here with Lenovo ideapad 110.

Realtek HD driver only allowing one switch from speakers to headphones. If I switch back to speakers they work, but won't switch any more times to headphones.

Solved by uninstalling Realtek HD in Device Manager. Also select "Delete the driver software for this device" in the dialog box that pops up.

This requires a restart.

The computer then defaults to "High Definition Audio Device" which works fine.

I have a similar issue on laptop Lenovo Ideapad 510S-13IKB, that also uses Realtek HD audio.

Sometimes when I plug the headphones jack (while music plays on internal speakers), the music stops on speakers, however it does not play on headphones. Re-inserting the plug does not work. It seems to happen after laptop went to sleep mode. After a fresh system restart, the jack works well. If I plug an USB audio dongle, the audio jack on the dongle works well - this is my workaround if I don't want to restart the laptop.

The audio on jack always recovers after laptop restart, without touching it. This tells me that it is not a bad electrical contact, it should be a driver or hardware bug related to system sleep.

I am having a similar issue, with headphones, which were working before a recent W10 update, no longer were working after the reboot. I have Dell Inspiron 15-5000. The speakers do not mute when the headphones are plugged and there is no sound going to the headphones; I just get the windows message that they were not recognized by the Realtek HD Audio manager. I had been using hibernate / sleep mode so I tried another reboot (thanks mihvoi for the idea). It made no difference.
In the Control Panel / Sound settings there is a "Speaker/headphones" device, and I noticed it had a a single “L R Analogue Jack” appearing under the Jack Information at the bottom of the General tab, whereas normally there is also a “L R Front Panel 3.5 mm Jack” here. I changed the Device Usage to “don’t use this device (disable)”. Then I rebooted. After the reboot I changed the Device Usage to “use this device (enable)”, and after pressing “Apply” immediately both the “L R Analogue Jack” and the “L R Front Panel 3.5 mm Jack” appeared, and my headphones worked when I plugged them in, without further error messages from the Realtek HD Audio. Bloody W10!
