my question: can i put an agp8x card ie a radeon 9600pro in an agp4x slot? and if i can how much of a performance drop will i see?

Sure u can use a AGP8x card in a AGP4x mobo. all the AGP8x cards are baclwards compatible. And there is virtually no performance difference between AGP4x and AGP8x interface.

AGP8x is just a marketing gig.

From some of the users of X8 most set it to 4x anyway,most fined game play faster at x4.I run mine at x4 and I have a 3 gig,with a GF4 ti4600.I tried the high end cards and din't see the money diff,s in game play with the games I play.Maybe when the next batch comes out they may meet my standereds.
