<alarm sounding> dream gets interrupted at this point

All this just to ask : current wargames have AI difficulty levels, but
they don't have AI personality settings. The old wargame "Ancient Art
of War" used to let you choose your opponent - be it Napoleon - always
trying to maneuver around your flanks, Szun Tsu - the master tactician
or my personal favourite Crazy Ivan which didn't have any strategy, but
was always in a good mood.

Any ideas and insights on this highly appreciated

IIRC Sid Meier's Gettysburg had AI's whose tactics were influenced by
personality chosen.

Not a bad idea- as long as personality can be set apart from
difficulty, and there is an option for ' random'.
And if the game setup means that any personality has the same basic
chance of success - eg Frontal assault AI would lose a Blitzkrieg game,
Napoleon would not be fitting for Kursk (fiddling with nonexistant
flanks etc).

OTOH the better strategy AI's (SSG, Stardock and um...) seem to be
grounded in solid tactical doctrine (within the game system, not
necessarily in real world terms) combined with basic scripting for the
relevant scenario.

It might be extremely difficult to have personalities as per your AAW
example without that AI always losing in a specific scenario.

I know that I, at least, may have trouble catching a feel for an AI's
"personality" by observing its movement of units on the battlefield.
Often this is a subtle thing that I miss because I don't "see the
forest for the trees," and because, frankly, many AI's are just too
weak to make their maneuvering seem anything other than chaos, even if
they have a "personality" to their play.

I personally would be helped in this by a) better AI (duh!), and b)
some kind of feedback from the game, from my own supposed "staff", be
it reports of "radio intercepts" that indicate command confusion,
scouts observing panicky troops, or the like (I'm reminded of the
tactical battles in Rome: Total War where you actually see the opposing
commander fleeing the battle, and get an excited voice-over announcing
it).

Actually, to get serious for a sec, I think something bigger must have
happened. He's talking a little bit like someone would when a close
friend dies. In any case, something must have happened.
