Hello everyone,

Long story short, I have been through 4 on site techs with Dell Alienware support and after replacing every single piece of hardware on my rig except the hard drives and cables, they cannot fix my constant BSOD's and figure out why Prime95 is crashing instantly on a Small FFT's test.

So they are offering to exchange my system.

I am going to list the specs of the system I have now and then the system they are offering me. I want to know in the opinion of you guys out there if you think this is a fair deal, or am I getting ripped off?

Current Specs:

System: Alienware Area 51 ALX
Processor: Intel (R) Core i7 980x Gulftown @ 3.33 Ghz (2010 processor, Intel Website Price: $1000)
Memory: 3 x 2 GB 1867 Mhz Tri Channel Kingston Hyper X Ram Sticks
Graphics: 2 x ATI Radeon HD 5970 Crossfire
Motherboard: Alienware 0J560M Intel X58 Chipset
Hard Drives: 2 x 640 GB Western Digital SATAII Drives Raid 0 Array
Power Supply: 1000 Watts

New System:

System: Alienware Aurora
Processor: Intel (R) Core i7 4820K (Current Price: $350)
Memory: 4 x 4 GB 1600 Mhz Quad Channel Ram Sticks (Manufacturer Unknown)
Graphics: 1 x ATI Radeon HD 8990
Motherboard: x79 Chipset (Not sure of exact board)
Hard Drives: 2 x 3 TB Hard Drives Raid 0 Array
Power Supply: 875 Watts

I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me their input on what they think and if I should go for this exchange or just keep trying to trouble shoot my system. The one thing that really hit me is the processor price difference. The one I have now is still $1000 on Intel's website and the one they are offering is $350. Thanks for your time everyone. Have a great day.

PS: Please keep in mind I paid $5000 for this system back in 2010 and the system they are offering me now is worth $2500.

Don't bump posts. - G

Well to be fair, the 980x does not currently sell for $1000, you may see old discontinued listings on like new egg and such for 1000 since that was the price it was selling for when it was still being sold, but the chip goes for about 350-500 now. With that said, I would ask for at least a 4930k. I wouldn't be happy about the GPU either.

Right, I understand. I was just going by what I saw on Intel's website. So basically the two main questions here are what is better, the i7 980x or the i7 4820k?

Also is 1 ATI Radeon HD 8990 more powerful than 2 ATI Radeon HD 5970 in crossfire?

I just don't feel right about this system they are offering me. Especially the CPU. Anyone else have any input or advice? Everyone's 2 cents is greatly appreciated.

No you're not getting a fair deal, that system has already depreciated to half its' value anyways. If you exchange it for that equivalent you're not getting back what you originally paid for that system. That system would actually be around $1700 if you built an identical one yourself.
