:bounce: Good Morning The World:

I have tried to install Internet Explorer 8; the updated version. As it was installing I get a message up saying that it could not install it because I am running 32/64 bit systems. Why did this happen when it is actually software from Microsoft and I am running Windows 7? I would appreciate your help.

Allan

:bounce: Yes; i knew it does. However; there is a slightly updated or optimised versions for people who use Google, Yahoo etc. search engines, but not for Windows7. There is also a problem with downloading updates that have the two systems in their computer 32/64 bit systems. What it is, I do not know.

Allan

I'm afraid that I have no idea what you are talking about. I run Windows 7 64-bit on my computer and have the latest version of IE8 installed, complete with all updates for 32- and 64-bit versions.

IE was installed with Windows 7, the updates came via Windows update. I have never had any problems getting updates for either and have never heard of these updated or optimized versions.

If you are trying to install another version of IE8, wherever you got it from, I would suggest that first you need to uninstall the versions that you currently have.

I think this is news to us, or (perhaps more likely) a misunderstanding of some sort. Can you point us to the place where you read this?

:bounce: To set the record straight I will look for what Iwas talking about; then I will post it back to you, for you to try it out on your computer.

:bounce: I went to Microsoft.Com; it still might be up on their open page link: Internet Explorer 8 Optimized for Bing and MSN; then as I went to install it again this came up; Dose not support your system architecture 32/64 bit. This is what I do not understand. After all I am using other Microsoft products; why now? Please explain.

bounce: I will look into this more; you may be right; if i find it I will send it on to you to try?

Are you talking about this page? That's the general download page for IE8 itself. If you're using Windows 7 you've already got IE8 installed so you can't download and install it again.

The whole "Optimized for Bing and MSN" thing is just a marketing tagline. It doesn't actually mean anything, other than they want you to use Bing and MSN.

You are the only one that complained about it. I will not send it to you anymore.

Back to the link; MS from what i was told below that it was a marketing tagline; if this was so does one mean that it will only go as fast as the normal Internet Explorer 8. Go to MS.com today; is should still be up there; read what it has to say about the speed of the program, and then get back to me with your advice.

:bounce: I just deleted out IE 8 and downloaded and installed what I was talking about. The same thing came up; it does not support the 32/64 bit Architecture which seems strange; do you have any explanation why this has happened as i would appreciate it?

Thanks,

Allan

Do you have an actual URL I can look at? I don't really want to spend time searching for a page that might or might not be the one you're referring to.

OK folks, according to this link Microsoft is offering a version of IE8 optimized for Bing & MSN! I'de certainly never heard of this before. But, interestingly, it doesn't mention Windows 7 as one of the supported OSes. I wonder if this is because this is just the same as the Windows 7 version?

Anyway, in view of the OP's problems, and the fact that I don't use Bing and MSN, I think I'll stick with the "normal" version.

To the OP: unless you particularly want to use Bing as your search engine rather than Google I'd recommend reinstalling the IE8 that comes with Windows 7. In fact, in view of your problems, I'd recommend that anyway. BTW, are you running the 64-bit version of Windows? It's not a question of your trying to install the 64-bit browser on a 32-bit system is it?

It would be nice if there was a little more information on exactly what this is. The Softpedia one is just standard IE8 with some preconfigurations for the search provider, accelerators, etc. I suspect the "Bing Optimized" version is exactly the same.

In other words, you don't really need to download and install a new copy of IE8 (and if you use Windows 7 you can't since it's already built in), all you really need to do is to configure the accelerators, search providers, etc. This is essentially the same thing you have to do the first time you run IE8, although you can also do it through "Tools -> Manage Add-Ons".

I think the problem is that there simply isn't an install kit for IE8 that works on Windows 7 because Windows 7 has IE8 built into it. There's no way to remove it.

If you look under "Control Panel -> Programs and Features" you'll see that IE8 isn't in the list of installed programs and so there's no way to uninstall it. You can go into the features list and "disable" it, but that's not the same as removing it.

Do yourself a favor, update ie8 via windows update, install firefox as well as the adblock plus extension, set google as the default search setting. Close ie and never use again. if you like the ie look, i think you can even download a theme to make firefox look like it. But save yourself trouble and have less security holes by using firefox. All the other guys are right though. Pretty sure ie is with win7, dont think you can uninstall it as it is so tied in with the os now.

If Alan has managed to install Windows 7 on a 16-bit computer then he is a very, very clever man. We should be asking him so solve our problems rather than the other way round.
