Question Alternating Current / Direct Current for an HDD Caddy ?

There is much more to it than simply looking at an icon indicating DC vs AC and then "wiring" things together.

Your stated objective is "data recovery" and apparently 2 out of 3 backup drives have already been lost.

To be fair a new caddy will have some risk involved.

But far less risk than some Frankenstein rig to provide power and data connections to that last drive.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Well if you say so , but I can't what what is the matter with it.
Yeah. While generally, AC current is provided to a power supply, whether it is PC psu or a power brick (wall wart), in order to supply DC current to electronics.
However, whether or not you are misreading the Input/Output specifications on the power brick, may be questionable, no one here is willing to take the risk.
AC and DC current cannot directly interface with the other.
If the laptop power brick does indeed output DC, then the most important specification is having matching voltages with the hard drive caddy.
Secondly, the power brick can be rated to output a higher current (amps) than what the caddy needs, because a load will only draw the amount needed. However, if the caddy requires more current than what the brick is rated to supply, it may simply not work; depending on the amount of difference.

I don't have the specs for my old caddy as it's stripped to the bare bones.
Can you show a photo of this caddy?
(upload to imgur.com and post link)

Does it have any identification/specification info on it?

If you're not sure about proper voltage required, then you'll most likely kill the caddy and any drive connected to it,
if you use wrong voltage power supply.

There can be lot of different voltages used. Not really possible to guess the correct one.
And you'll get only a single try. Feed more voltage than allowed and you get magic smoke and dead hardware.
