Am I just unlucky with PSUs?

Back in September I got all the components for my first build and the PSU I had was an EVGA 500W 80+ white. I get it all in the case, get it all plugged in correctly and press the power button and... nothing. I decide to wait a day and then I try again and this time the fans and lights come on for a fraction of a second then cut off again. Look it up online and try the paperclip test and get the same results so my mom (I'm only 16) buys me a VisionTek 500W power supply and everything turns on. I start to run some benchmarks that come with the gtx 950 disc and at the end the system turns off. I turn the PSU off then back on and try to turn on the system and nothing happens for a while then a large spark comes from the power supply along with the smell of something burning. Not sure if any components are fried but I took it out of my system and bought a Rosewill 600W semi-modular 80+ bronze and it's on its way.
Here's the parts:

My advice to you would be to buy a different brand of psu from the ones that you have already bought and test it in someone else's house as your electricity supply may have something to do with it.3 of my psus have buzzed in one year, its just a headache that i don't wish anyone else to have as it can take a while to find the reason behind these issues.
Maybe a little unlucky, but looks like your buying the cheapest PSU's you can find, not a good idea. Cheap PSU's are cheap for a reason and considering how important they are for the performance and safety of the rest of your components, it's a good idea to buy quality ones. The brand name alone doesn't make a PSU good or bad, you need to research what makes a good quality PSU and go from there. Most manufacturers make some good PSU's and some not so good PSU's.
