Am I running 60hz or 144hz?

I went and got myself an Asus VG248QE and currently running an AMD R9 290. I have connected it with a DisplayPort and set the resolution to 1920x1080 and refresh rate to 144hz.

Problem is, when I go and do the UFO test, it only comes up as 60fps@60hz, not 144fps@144hz as it should. I don't know if I am missing something in the setup, or if the UFO test is wrong, if the GPU is incapable of running 144hz, or if its because it is an AMD card and a "nvidia" screen.

In my CCC it shows 'Maximum reported refresh rate: 144 hz", but then how come the UFO test only shows 60hz? It this point I have no idea if I actually have 144hz or just 60hz, as I cant seem to see any difference.

OS is win7 64, gpu is Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC .

Thanks in advance :)

Shouldn't need a driver for a monitor. I would think the UFO test to be limited. Try running something else and see if you can get the framerate out of it. If you have 144Hz selected in control center, that should be the default refresh rate. Also, depending on how graphics intensive the application or game is, a 290 won't be able to sustain 144Hz. In Diablo 3 I set my max frame rate to 200, Cntrl + R for the FPS overlay, and while I can run around at 160+frames, when there are enemy filled screens + other players plus general mayhem, my frames will dip to around 80 FPS, that's with my crossfire disabled and all the eye candy on. Every game is gonna be different. Dragon Age Inquisition I get 90 FPS or so with crossfire enabled...
That monitor that you put in is a 144hz monitor make sure that you are using an HDMI 1.3 cable or using a DisplayPort to achieve 144hz, Also ensure that you installed any drivers that came with your monitor.

As I said in the post; it is already connected with a DisplayPort, and I have been unable to find any drivers online for the screen matching an AMD card (the cd was only with nvidia drivers), so if you have a link for a working driver that would be appreciated.

Thanks for your answer though

I have the Gigabyte Windforce 290X OC X2.

Okay cheers Jossrik - I didnt think I would need a driver unless I was planning on 3D gaming. The games look relatively smooth, but as I said, I can't see any visible difference between 60hz and 144hz, but that may just be my eyes that are in the wrong - I'll try a fast moving first-person shooter, but it was mainly because the Test UFO only went to 60fps/60hz I got confused and thought I'd ask the internet.

I looked up the test UFO and it's supposed to scale to at least 120Hz, though I don't remember reading that it'll goto 144Hz. In any event, the only difference that you should notice is that if you move the cursor faster it won't be as choppy. Other than that, From what I hear (I only have a 60Hz monitor) the difference between 60 and 75 is noticeable but the difference past that is negligible to most peoples. I'm fine at 60Hz but the next upgrade for me is gonna be to 120, still 1920x1080. Then I'll jump to 4k maybe in a couple of years. The important thing to take away is that in game you're not gonna have constant frames and the 144Hz should prevent tearing making the overall experience better. You're not looking for an amazing difference here. Pro FPS gamers, ya, maybe it helps, all us just trying to get the 10 year olds not to make fun of our moms, your mileage may vary.
