Not really a good gaming rig there, and there are some larger problems as well.

First up:
You have listed a DDR3 kit designed for Intel i7 builds. It's a waste in an AMD build where you need dual channel, not tri-channel.

Next:
The 810 is not a great buy for you. World of Warcraft is not coded to make use of 4 cores, and the 810 is rather slow.

You can re-use most of your other parts, but the Antec Neo is not real high on my list of PSUs. You can get buy with it I think.

Once you shift around your build you can get a bit better video card.

List incomming....

OK this is easy:

Intel E8400 -This will blow away your CPU choice. Most games will benefit more from the faster dual core than a slower quad.
Gigabyte P43 board - A solid performer that won't break the bank
G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
HIS 4850 A well-cooled card that should work well given your case.

If you want to overclock you can certainly do so, otherwise this build is complete, and I think will cost a bit less and give around 20% better performance in games 😉

I agree with Proximon that your cpu choice is not the best gaming choice .

If you want to go with AM3 then the 720 BE is the better option . Its also cheaper and maybe a little faster in games than an e8400 .

You could reuse your case , dvd drives , and floppy drive .

Possibly the sound blaster card too , but it wont be an improvement over the on board sound on your new motherboard

I would continue to use XP for now . Vista is being replaced in a few months anyway o now is not really a good time to upgrade your OS

4 gig of RAM is plenty . A 2 x 2 gig kit is ideal .
Despite the common advice to use more than that amount tomshardware saw ZERO performance gains on an i7/ vista 64 bit system when they went from 3 gig to 6 and then 12 gig .
Windows , games and applications just dont use all that RAM

if you can spare the money get an phenom II 920 or 940. im waiting for the 955 myself. wait another 2 weeks and the am3's and am2+ might drop again i think since the 955 phenom ii is coming out. but yea u can save your drives, fan's, e.t.c. if you want a new looking case just strip it and repaint it. and anything over 4gb of ram is pretty much useless at the moment like outlander said. and you can get a ati 4670 for 60 bucks on neweeg which would be better. 400 bucks and you can have a pretty decent rig.

k, i see you guys suggesting NON-am3 stuff... but is there something wrong with going am3 atm? i see it as somewhat future-proofing... you won't have to upgrade motherboard in the foreseeable future.

btw, 920 or 940 won't work, they're am2+ i think.

go with the 720BE, it'll be very good.

Why not AM3?

I have no major objection to a 720BE. The prices get closer than you might think because to match the E8400 you have to get a 790GX board and 1066 RAM.

The OP is not really looking for an upgrade path. He's looking for a build that will last him as long as his last build did. That's what most people actually end up doing. they build a computer and are satisfied with it for around 4 years.

No one is upgrading their socket 939 boards today, they are replacing them, along with the RAM and CPU.

So, although I have promoted upgrade paths in the past, I now no longer give a damn :) Except for those very low budget builds that really will need improvement quickly.

Once you get the AM3 notion out of there, 720BE is still a fine choice for a CPU. It will likely perform just under the E8400 in WoW, but then both are more than enough.

well am3 is in it's infancy, and the 8xx series chipsets come out in Q4 this year, and the cpu's designed for those chipsets might get bottlenecked by 7xx chipsets.

also get a crossfire board and a 4830, those things are amazing for what you pay in crossfire, equal to a GTX 285 for $190

Hi,

WoW thanks for the Great Suggestions...Proximon I spent the better part of the evening reading your Guides they are "Awesome" !

Guide to Choosing Parts.

My personal big list of parts.

I did research a 775 Dual core Build, this is what I put together before the AM3 build:
Gigabyte EP43-UD3L Motherboard CPU Bundle - Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.80GHz Retail Processor [$199.99]

Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 Video Card - 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0 x16, CrossFireX Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, HDMI Support, VGA Support [$89.99] after $15.00 mir

OCZ Fatal1ty 4GB Dual Channel PC8500 DDR2 1066MHz (2x2048MB) [$49.99]

Now that is a Low $354.97 Budget Build...BUT does it work ?

That seems to be a good budget build, although I don't think you need that RAM. let's see what I could do with a 720BE that would beat it...

X3 720BE and Sapphire 4830 combo - $197 after MIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.183511

OCZ 1066 Reapers - $41 after MIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227289
The AMD CPU does better with 1066 RAM than Intel does, hence the more expensive RAM. When comparing the two CPUs you have to figure this in.

Gigabyte 790X board - $110
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128387

Total - $348 after MIR
Now, that DOES beat your build, at the same price.

For that price, Intel build:

E8400 and UD3R combo - $253 after MIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.181190

Corsair 800 mhz RAM - $30 after MIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145184

Sapphire 4830 - $80 after MIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102822

Total - $363 after MIR

If you had any use for that third core, I would say the 720 would be the way to go.

Otherwise, it's a bit up in the air. The P45 board I put into this second build is a step up from the P43 you listed.... not a big deal but the price was right and it's very high quality.

Patch 3.1, which just came out for WoW, added support for up to 3 cores. Just FYI. 😉

Also, if you're doing an AM3 build... wait for Monday. That's when the new Phenom II 955 comes out for AM3. 😀

Well, there ya go 😉 Good tips. I have an account but haven't logged in or read the patch notes 😛

It will probably be around $250, especially considering the recent drops in price on the 940 (currently at $169 on Newegg with a coupon code), but I doubt we'll see i7 cuts, because I really don't think the 955 will do anything to contend the i7's dominance.

well it does come extremely close in some benchmarks and beats the i7 940 in others and the 965 in games at higher resolutions.

if they put the price down to even $240 and X58 chipset motherboards down to $170 then it will feature in a lot more builds and therefore more profit for intel.

Hi,

FYI: AMD Phenom II 955 Benchmarks <...TH Post.

not neccisarily, the 3870 is much better than a 4670. look at the benchmarks. the 4670 only has an edge when AA is on, other than that though, 3870 is far supierior.

Hi, [I like to say Hi 😍 ]

Let's Choose my New VC Now Please while the prices are Low !!!

#1 Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart

Note: I use Tigerdirect because they have the MFG Specifications Listed.
Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 Video Card - 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0 x16, CrossFireX Ready, (Dual Link) DVI, HDMI, VGA Final Price: $74.99
HD4830.jpg

the 4830 is gonna be discontinued though unfortunately. i dont know how stable of a purchase that would be since its gonna be replaced by the 4770 or 4750 or whatever it is...

Hi, [This is Order week]

I too like the HD4830...however I had a problem finding Info, Most charts did Not include this VC.

The HD4850 was on All the Charts & looked Great...for $50.00 more OUCH !!!

Like you said Proximon this is a 3-4 year system "a throwaway" Question is in 3-4 Years will I want to do a upgrade @ which time the AM3 will be Obsolete beyond all measure ?

Now for the Big News:
http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=3545

Up first is the Phenom II X4 940 that is now priced at $168.99 with free shipping from ZipZoomfly. That's a terrific deal that's obviously influenced by AMD's preparations for their new 955/945 series, due out shortly. This a $35 premium over the 720BE, but considering the number of video/audio applications we utilize along with the constant need to have every messaging, social networking, and browser window open, a fourth core and increased speed is worth it for us.

http://www.guru3d.com/news/amd-phenom-ii-x4-955-32ghz-and-3-ghz-athlon-x2/

AMD is brewing up some new processors. The first is to be released next week and is the Phenom II X4 955 processor (April 23rd). This part should be a 125W TDP processor with a frequency of 3.2GHz, it will be the fastest chip in AMD's lineup.

From what we heard is that the processor will be a Black Edition CPU which means unlocked. Pricing wise in the US expect roughly $300 for the CPU.

Yeah saw that blog post :)

I hadn't got to the 955 info yet, but I knew it was soon. If it's just slightly faster than the 940, it's going to make for some very confused times as we try to sort out who needs which CPU.

Generally most sockets have a lifetime of around 3 years. At least according to what we have seen lately. People who purchased socket 939 motherboards 4 years ago were disappointed to find that all the faster CPUs for that socket had been removed from the retail channels by the time they were ready to upgrade.

Socket 775 has been around for a while, but the earlier motherboards aren't compatible with the later CPUs.
