AM3+ question

Hello,

Can you tell me if an AM3+ cpu will work on my AM3 motherboard? It's an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO. I called Asus but the non tech person working in the tech department only read the list of CPUs that were posted on their site when the MOBO was released. My current CPU is a Phenom II x4, 2.5ghz, 65w, 905e. I bought another system for my son who does not need the horsepower. That system came with a AMD FX-4100 3.6ghz, AM3+. I wanted to swap them.

No. The board is too old, out of production for awhile. Write asus and see if they will email you a bios file, but the board chipset may not work with am3+ http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4A785TDV_EVO/#CPUS.

Thanks for the response. I saw that they don't produce this board anymore and that really sucks because I built this thing like 2 years ago this month. :cry:

So instead of buying another board would you know by chance which one of the CPUs they list is the best? When I built it I got the Phenom IIX4 905e (HD905EOCK4DGI),2.5GHz,65W,rev.C2,SocketAM3,Quad-Core.

It plays the games ok I just want to kick it up a notch.

Try overclocking the cpu first. Drop the ram speed a notch and increase the cpu fsb by 25%. For example, I drop my 1333 ram to 1066 and increase my cpu fsb from 200 to 250 so the ram speed is 1333. Or you can look for a six core on sale this weekend, but I wouldn't spend over $150. You might see more improvement by upgrading your video card if your power supply is strong enough.

I wish I had the cash to do that. Hard to justify when this system is only a couple years old. I checked around and found the Phenom II x6 3.3ghz 1100T Black edition for $180. If I could find a faster mobo+CPU+ Ram for that price I would spend the money. :eek:

I am not really an expert first of all. But let me add my 2 cents in this thread. I have noticed that you are talking about improving the gaming performance of your current system.

Since your current mobo won't support the AM3+ BDZ that you got with the new system, your only option is to either buy a new motherboard for your old system, then swap the processors or buy a new processor for your current AM3 motherboard.

I have seen the BullDozer benchmarks vs other AMD Quad core processors at THW. As far as gaming is concerned, the FX-4100 won't be a very good option when you can buy the 1100T or 980BE that gave much better performance with Battlefield 3 as compared to Bulldozer FX-4100.

But then, you can get a decent AM3+ motherboard like THIS one (link from one of the website I browse often for checking out the latest prices of hardware in my country, India).

Buying a new motherboard would ensure that you can manage with the Bulldozer you already have and may even save when you decide to buy a new processor sometime in future.

Thanks for the response. I tried your link but it did not work for me. What was the model of that board?

I think I will take your advice and leave the FX-4100 in the other system. I currently play MW3 and am looking at BF3 now.

Instead of getting the 1100T I think it would be best if I just get a new MOBO that will house my current CPU until I get some extra cash to get another CPU. By buying the 1100T and keeping my current MOBO I will be locked into the max my board will handle and not have any future hopes.

So....with that being said, what is the best gaming MOBO that I can get that will be backwards compatible with my current CPU and have the ability to upgrade to future CPU's? I am looking to spend around $200 and want something rock solid. The board would need to be able to play nice with the other current hardware listed in my system.

Thanks to anyone who can leave an opinion or advice.

BF3 is oddly is all about your GPU, but if you're going to be play other games and are now looking for a 'new' system then IMO I'd go with the Intel i5-2500K. In BF3 the CPU usage is very high with the FX-4100 (~70%) vs i5-2500K (~35%), but even the cheapo AMD Athlon II X4 645 (cut-off) will play BF3 with similar FPS as any CPU.

However, since 'most' folks play '> 1 game' the i5-2500K is the ideal performance to priced CPU, yep it's +$100 but well worth the money.
