hi 😀
i have HP Pavilion a6540in
i know that the system is very old now & the PSU is weak,i got this pc when i didnt know how to make a gaming rig but i want to use this as a secondary pc for gaming
i can upgrade RAM if necessary

& i was wondering if a amd radeon 7750 will work & if the CPU will be bottle necking the GPU during gaming?also will it play modern games in medium/high or should i just make a new custom rig?
i have a 19" 60hz 1440X900 monitor for this pc

At 55w as long as the psu can actually put out stable power it should run methinks on a 250w.
Typical total system consumption from alot of the reviews ive seen is around 200w.
I say go for it as is. As i said earlier the only concern of mine for op would be whether the psu can acually output labeled wattage. If not then a psu isnt pricey that can power that system

Didn't you even read my second post? :??:

I stated there that a HD 7750 was 55W and perform better than any other low-wattage card...

A core 2 duo doesn't use a lot of wattage... It should work on a 250W PSU...

Some 250W's unit may support 7750, but not all. It depends on quality and the amperages. If you OP would show me the label, it would be great. But I kinda against the Idea of 7750 but instead to get a much lower end GPUs instead because 7750 is PCI-E 3.0 (May have problem on your slot as it's usually 1.1/1.0) and would not take the risk to use a 7750 on an OEM 250W PSU.

the power supply is a
bestec 250 atx 12z rev H5R

+12V 14A
+5V 25A
+3.3V 18A
-12V 0.8A
+5VSB 2A 2.5A peak

+5V & +3.3V 165W max
+5v & +12V 235W max

i can upgrade the psu if required...but the thing is i am already building a new rig with a GTX 560 & this PC is going to be only for occasional gaming & i don't want to spend much on it..

i think i read in a few places that even high end cards wont be able to use pcie 1.0 fully..so if this is true then pcie 3.0 cards wont be a problem right?

also do you guys think the 7750 will be bottlenecked significantly because of the core2duo?(if it is i guess there is not much point in buying a gpu for this pc...:))

It's 50/50... HP tend to use cheap OEM PSU's in their box's and the fact it's old.... I don't know. If he had a Dell I'd 100% say go for it. Yes, typically Dell's PSU's are proprietary but tend to be on higher quality side.

My mother has a similar HP as the OP's and I installed a 9400GT (I had laying around for troubleshooting) and the thing wouldn't even boot.
