I would rather run a a10/a8 for a while and then add a graphics chip later

The pentiums are going to be dated real soon

$150 means you are only leaving $20-40 for the 6670 with an A10 or A8. Good luck with that. You might find a crummy DDR3 6670 for $50 after rebate, but the DDR3 versions are pretty poor performance. Same goes for the 7750 DDR3, they are pretty bad, and that's probably what you are going to get for $80 (Pentiums are close to $70).

That review is useless because they used a Radeon 6670 GDDR5. Anyone who knows what they're doing get's a DDR3 model for Dual Graphics. The GDDR5 model is better for most other stuff, but it's much worse for Dual Graphics because it can't get in sync with the IGP due to its much faster memory. That screws up Dual Graphics performance.

Never, I repeat NEVER, get a GDDR5 model for Dual Graphics. The 6670 isn't fast enough for the GDDR5 model to be too much faster than the DDR3 model, unlike the 7750, so it's not a huge deal anyway. Sure, there's a considerable difference, but for Dual Graphics, the DDR3 model is better because it can get in better sync with the IGP and that is important to get high performance and low stutter.

FM2 is getting upgrades, so they wouldn't necessarily be stuck at Trinity level performance. If Kaveri comes to FM2, then there will be potential for a huge CPU performance improvement. Still, you make a good point. We know that the other two platforms already have better performing options and at least for AM3+, we already know that more are supposed to be on the way whereas with FM2, we're not entirely sure yet.

That's a difficult one- choose your bottle-neck. Do you want a CPU bottle-neck or a GPU bottleneck? I can't think of a good solution that doesn't involved upgrades for all options involved except waiting to start off with a little more money. Even going up to $200 can improve things greatly.

Theoretically, without upgrades, the A8 system would probably be better on average, but in practice, it would vary between titles and even settings so much that it'd be crazy to go off averages. That'd be like comparing average performance between an i3-3220 and an FX-6300. Single/dual threaded performance will be like 50% faster or so on the i3 whereas heavily threaded performance will be like 50% faster or so on the FX, making average performance comparisons nearly useless.

Do you have any proof that DDR5 runs slower in dual graphics? If you have benchmarks I'd love to see them.

This one seems to contradict your theory:

It's GDDR5 and I'll take a look. I can more easily find proof of the syncing problem in discrete cards though since that's more widely tested (IE between cards with different clock frequencies or in AMD's case, different GPU configurations), but I'll probably be able to find links.

For $200 I would grab an Phenom II x4 965 and a 7770 GDDR5

This gets you the AM3+ platform that lets you use the FX6300 and FX8350 and steamroller later on

Hello All....

I know its been 5 days since the last post but....

Im dealing with the whole A10-5800 / ASUS F2A85-v PRO / Asus Radeon HD 6670 dual graphics "thingy"....

I will admit, its been a pain in the ars. Looking at the reviews online made me feel like it was a good choice. Then I built the system and I cant find a "how to" to "tell me how to get it done" for dummies when it comes to setting it all up. I'll consider myself a dummy at this point. No need to tell me in future comments 😉.... Anywho...

It seems there is a lot of info on the net but, its spread out between forums / sub-forums and youtube, depending on if you want to OC or just Dual Gfx.

I'm giving it 2 more days of fiddling in the BIOS or AI Suite to get a stable O.C. and the Dual Gfx running......
If I cant, then I'm buying a Higher end Gfx card and considering the gpu and the 6670 card a waste for me.

I really want this all to work. Below is my rig and what its intended use is.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Games at this point:
Champions of Regnum
BF3
COD's
Modern Warfare's
Bioshock Infinite

Graphics:
GIMP
Sony Vegas HD 11
Hauppauge HD PVR 2

Did you even read the post above yours where he clearly states that he has built the system already and is having trouble setting up the crossfire.... Any ways here is what amd says to do:

After installation of the 6670 into your pc of your graphics card, install the latest AMD graphics drivers. After driver installation, the option to enable AMD Radeon™ Dual Graphics should become available in the AMD VISION Engine Control Center.

Once installed, go into the “Performance” section of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center and check the box that says 'Enable Crossfire". Then download and install the catalyst application profiles app (same page as the amd catalyst driver download). For best performance they say to have your monitor plugged into the 6670..

Here is where i found the info http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/dual-graphics/Pages/dual-graphics.aspx#4

Good luck man..

Thanks...

Is there any order to how I should attack this????? Such as:
Example:
1) Reset everything to defaults and start fresh....
2) Make sure the dual gfx settings are working properly
3) Try OC'ing and check the mem speed in the bios...

Im just really starting to feel that I wasted $ on the rig as a whole...

Does anyone feel I'll be able to enjoy the games I listed above with this setup?

Thanks,

Update...
I think this is going to become my kids recording studio PC...
Not even going to bother with it for gaming.
Please, dont get me wrong, I'm not saying its junk... I messed up for what I wanted it to do.
It will suite just fine I think for recording from his mixer.

OFF TO PCPARTPICKER!

Thanks for all the help guys.. I will still get it functioning up to par and post the results.

Thanks....

Your example of steps sounds about right.. I would set everything at stock default settings, then put the 6670 in the pci-e slot, boot windows and install the driver, enable dual graphics (hybrid crossfire), install the catalyst application profiles, test to make sure the dual graphics works right in the games you play, then you can start overclocking the cpu and gpu's and tweaking the ram speed and stuff for max performance.. It will make an awesome recording studio PC for you son. Well good luck on the new build, any cpu and gpu in mind yet??

I'll follow your advice above...

This is a rig my son and I built for his gaming last yearish:
ASUS P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77 Chipset LGA
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3Ghz Unlocked
Kingston 8GB 1600MHz 10-10-10 DDR3
EVGA GeForce GTX 650 1GB GDDR5 PCI

I believe it ran me about $700ish including case, supply, HDD and some smaller incidentals. I almost have half-a-mind to copy it.
It plays Regnum, Modern Warfare, minecraft and bioshock infinity pretty well actually. He also uses it for Sony Vegas 11 video editing and recording with a Avermedia PCIe capture card.

Here is the link to one I started to piece together off-the-cuff since I first posted here.

I want it to do "no less than" the i5-2500k build above and be around the same price range. Not sure if I care about overclocking anymore though.
What do you think?

Maybe I should start a new thread... as this doesn't pertain to the original post anymore!!

Thanks!

changed mobo...

The only thing I might change is the 7770 2GB to a 7790 2GB for $169
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125454
The 7790 2GB is based on the new GCN1.1 core (AMD's brand spanking new Bonaire core and gets around 25ish% more FPS at roughly the same power draw as a 7770. In the end either card would probably be fine, I just like to get the newest thing I can for the money. Other options are a 650Ti Boost..

Hey Hey,
Heres what I ended up with:
Passmark rating: 2210
CPU: 5384
2D: 5384
3D: 1322
Mem: 1309
Disk: 1157

The intel I made him that runs Bioshock Inf is:
Passmark rating: 2756
CPU: 6323
2D: 768
3D: 2075
Mem: 1649
Disk: 1275

Does this mean anything to you???

Update:
Comp restarted itself...
Went into windows "fix"....
I have no idea where to start at this point.. To me, it's garbage.

I'm looking at your suggestion on the 7790 for the Intel rig. I have to get him a setup by the 11th... That's his bday. And why this is really pushing my buttons!

update again:
restarted fine...
3dmark score:
gfx: 2800
physics:4268
combined: 2191

Thoughts?

Well the scores seem about right but if it won't run stable then I would just run one of the gpu's preferably the 6670. The dual graphics only gets you max 15% more if your are very lucky in most 3d stuff and can slow you down in some games or just plain not work in some programs. So anyways so if it is more of a pain in the backside than it's worth just say heck with it...
Here are dual graphics benches with the 5800K and diffrent cards and some of the issues they had with it.

Thanks for all your help utroz! I started another thread on the next rig I showed you.
Feel free to join in! Much appreciated!
