AMD A10 6800k only 2 cores!?

Solution
That cpu has 2 modules with 2 cores(mostly intact cores) each. Windows sees the modules as the cores and the cores as a thread. What you are seeing is normal.
Interesting, can you post a screenshot of what CPU-Z says about it?

You're right it should be 4 cores, but windows is still seeing 4 threads (each core is a thread) and the CPU doesn't have hyper-threading (each core can run 2 threads) so... yeah.

Also where did you buy it from?

Edit: actually passmark seems to agree, you have 2 cores, but 4 threads, but the way AMD was making cores for a while... was deceptive or up for debate whether they were cores or not.

It is interesting and I bought it off of amazon, the A10 6800k Black Edition.

I have a stock mobo, so there isn't much I can do.

Well then what should I do? I guess return it if I can? I thought I was actually paying something that was worth it.

Same question: Is this a APU I should keep or get something better? I have DDR3 and GTX 970 with 750W PSU.

Well, it depends what you wanted to use it for, it will work like a quad core, if a program requires 4 threads. But it will perform worse than a true quad core, if the program requires 4 threads.

You won't really be finding a true quad core for the same price, that one that would perform better.

I'm afraid I'm not getting what I'm supposed to get, that is the problem I fear. Making it seem like a dual core makes it seem like I paid $100+ for something that I already had before.

Technically it is a quad core. Each module has 2 physical cores that share some resources.

However this being said the Intel G4560 is $60 and while it is only a dual core(4 threads with hyperthreading) it would walk all over the 6800k. However you'd also need a new motherboard and ram(ddr4).

If you want a true quad core you'll need to go with an i5(new mobo and ram) or wait for the Ryzen 5 cpus(again new mobo and ram will be required).

A real quad core will cost you some money:
Code:

(The fx 8300 is a "real quad core" but with the same 2 threads deal, so you have 8 threads total, but you can see it's still worse than intel's i5 which is a pure true quad core, but that's because intel was making better CPUs than AMD)

Hey Oxi, I'm late to the party, but if you already have a decent GPU (970 is better than decent) no need to get an APU. I've read that the X4 860K or X4 880K are certainly the way to go for FM2+ socket type.

No iGPU on those chips, but MUCH better price to performance ratio.

Yeah, but FM2+ isn't FM2 compatible. I have an FM2 socket.
