A friend of mine wants to build a PC under $550.

He wants PCIe Socket 939 and Athlon 64.

This is what he has on his wishlist at newegg:

Please provide a list of components that he needs and what he will be using the system to do.

Edit: Please take out the http:// from your links or they won't work. What type of RAM does he currently have?

Try this:
1. <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-501&depa=1" target="_new">AMD 3000+ Retail</A> at Newegg = $146
2. <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-152-049&depa=1" target="_new">Chaintech VNF4 Ultra</A> at Newegg = $95
3. Sapphire <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-421R&type=Refurbished" target="_new">X600XT</A> (128MB, 128Bit, 500/740 freqs) refurb at Newegg = $68
4. <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-299&depa=1" target="_new">Mushkin Dual pack 1GB(2X512MB)</A>, PC3200 at Newegg = $85.67.
5. Seagate 160GB, <A HREF="http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4008242" target="_new">ST3160023A</A> at Outpost.com = $50 (after rebate)
6. <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-129-127&depa=1" target="_new">Antec Sonata</A> w/380W PSU for $102 (includes S/h for this item).

That total is $543.68 (after rebate + a little more for addl S/H). This system is significantly better than the parts you listed. I threw in the case because you wnat/need a good PSU to run this system well. The Sonata is a quiet, high quality case with a good PSU.
