AMD and the Associated Press announced a partnership to help push forward VR journalism. AMD said it will leverage its expertise in VR to provide support to the AP so it can create immersive 360-degree video and animated VR news content.

The AP is not NYT. That was just an aside. As I understand it, the AP is basically consists of a bunch of freelance journalists, and exists to sell their content to different news outlets. This avoids news organizations each needing to have a correspondent in every news hotspot around the world.

VR has been shown to evoke a greater degree of empathy, on the part of the viewer. I expect it will be a powerful propaganda tool, used by all sorts of different political groups, corporations, and special interest groups. Even terrorists.

But I generally like the idea of reporters using it. Sometimes, I'll read or watch a story and wonder what it's like to actually be there. This will get us one step closer. That said, I don't see this as my standard medium for news. Only for stories that really interest me.
