Hi, my friend has a problem with his new cpu. He bought the AMD Athlon II X4 640 And when he starts CPU-Z it says he only has 2 Cores instead of the 4 the processor is supposed to have.
He tried msconfig its showing 2 there aswell.

What do you think is the problem?

Solution

It has indeed 4 cores. http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Athlon%20II%20X4%20640%20-%20ADX640WFK42GM%20(ADX640WFGMBOX).html
But if your friend just replace a dual core cpu with this new quad core without reinstalling Windows, that is the problem.
Try to repair windows installation, or even do a fresh install.
the processor has 2 cores, with 4 modules. Its essentially splits the core into 2. it shares core resources.
its a theoretical 4-core when in truth it is a dual core with 2 modules per core.

EDIT: This was a generalized response given by the circumstances stated, not taking the specific CPU into mind.

After researching, this occurs with this specific CPU when you upgrade and do not reinstall OS *OR* You may have to type in the start bar, msconfig, then go to boot, advanced options. click the processor and set it to four cores up from 2. You may also have to enable the 2 cores by going into the BIOS.

It probably is this. I asked him if he reinstalled and he said that he didn't and he had a Dual core.
