Pirate island might come after? Or maybe it got cancelled. Maybe PI would have been on 20nm and it didn't happen. I don't even think summer 2015 is enough time to bring 14nm so I don't know about this. It might be a self proclaimed prophecy of being a weak AMD generation. They need a refresh in 2015 but it might just be a rebrand gen again. The finfets can't come fast enough.

So they update AMD Linux drivers as soon as I switch to open source radeon. pfffttt. I wonder if backlight control will actually work on my A4-5000 in Gentoo with the new drivers? I am excited, but I don't know if little a4-5000 can make use of those video features. It struggles with madvr.

It is good to see that. Open source linux drivers had an issue with windows just not updating and turning into flickering messes on my rig when I opened up a ton of windows. I'm glad to see this happening, maybe I'll switch back to the binary drivers.

What I took from it is they will release a refresh of the current high end quite soon, maybe high clocked with gcn 1.2 and hbm, the ref liquid cooled beast ie PI and in the summer will launch a complete new architecture. It could be a paper launch with cards on shelves next autumn, that falls into line with current rumor.

For games, you could use a spare GPU to calculate

Problem: You now have to deal with multi-GPU communication problems, which means you are throwing another bandwidth bottleneck in the system. Just saying, the more things you have doing key processing, the more problems you are going to create with communication between them.

Technically, they`re both Equal in DAI on D3D... but it does puts the 980 in shame since it`s supposed to be around 17% Faster than the R9290X.

Seems MANTLE does needs some patching in DAI, or it could be caused by Denuvo DRM... i heard horrible things that it kills CPU performance.

Misread the graph while trying to look at it on a smartphone in one hand while trying to rock a baby with the other. Shouldn't attempt to multitask!

Certainly doesn't paint the either the 980 or the 290x in a bad light.

Isn't being built using Amd's help tho? I think its a Amd gaming evolved app so nothing to really see here.
Mantle it self increases performance Amd won't sell to many cards based on that

I can see Gaming Evolved working two ways depending on whether or not Mantle is on the table.

If it isn't, then AMD helps the developer to optimise DX for that game. So you end up with AMD outperforming Nvidia for DX.

On the other hand, if Mantle is to be one of the renderers for a GE title then AMD helps to optimise the game for Mantle, not DX, meaning the developer can do their own optimisations on the DX version for Nvidia. So, conversely a GE title could even inflate Nvidia's' performance too.

I was wondering what was happening with this thread. I was about to removing it from my morning tech + coffee routine.

I'm going to roll back to fglrx in Linux and see if it's any better. It finally popped up in gentoo overlays. It looks like I'm getting proper OpenCL Linux support, maybe 7970 in OpenCL will actually beat my 4x opteron system, lol.

It'll probably take some time to see if the X11 bug has been fixed. I'll be back with findings.

i hope this one goes through. i am trying and failing to post.....

Well, I gave up on linux drivers after I rebuilt kernel, recompiled some things, and got a hard lock when initializing xorg. Back on open source.

The new GPU leaks are interesting. Nvidia seems to be closing in on AMD's high resolution advantage, looking at how GM200 does well against Fiji/Bermuda at 1440 but at 4k it's not so hot.

Open source drivers still are lagging behind by a bit. But they are less work to deal with keeping working on Linux and the binary drivers don't have working backlight control on my laptop last I checked. And switching in Gentoo can be a pain sometimes. Maybe if I get bored over the holidays.
