So I want to install an R7 240 into an old hp which is running a Pentium D 805 and ATI Radeon Xpress 200 graphics which is part of the motherboard. I put the R7 240 in, hooked it up to a monitor using a DVI to VGA adapter and booted up windows XP media center, I downloaded this driver : http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows%20XP%20Media%20Center%20Edition and ran it. After I restarted the screen was still a low resolution and there was no Amd ccc and it gpu was not recognized, I realised I didnt uninstall the ati Radeon Xpress 200 graphics so I uninstalled everything with ati in its name in the change/remove programs in the control panel. After a reboot there was no difference and no gpu displayed in msi afterburner. Am I doing something wrong?

I don't have the driver disk because the card was from another prebuilt that I upgraded, also I tried running DDU in safe mode but it was not in the downloads folder when I got to safe mode for some reason but il try again

You install DDU while in the normal desktop like you would for any other pgm. It's only recommended the pgm be RUN while in Safe Mode. Although it will work in normal mode as well.

Apparenty I was using a different user profile with the same name so I couldnt get into the firefox downloads folder, I ran DDU in safe mode and also ran ccleaner which seems to have fixed about 10-11 years of registry errors, now where do I get the drivers for the r7 240? windows xp does not download them automatically and is instead asking for a floppy disk containing drivers, I tried the amd site like I said earlier but there was no ccc to be found, is that because they switched to amd crimson?

Assuming your XP is the 32 bit variety, this should be the correct driver (same as you posted): http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows%20XP%20-%20Professional/Home&RenderOnServer=true
I used the same driver search on the AMD site as you probably used to get there. If that doesn't work after doing DDU and CCleaner, you may have a issue with the card itself.

It is still called catalyst for the legacy drivers. Apparently XP still requires a legacy driver. Try it again and see if it works now.

I tried again and...... nothing, I veiwed the logs and the R7 240 and the ati xpress 200 were both recognized but when I rebouted my pc the resolution was still low and there was no sign of ccc, I dont think its an issue with the card itself since it was working before I replaced it with a gtx 970 in my main rig and has been staying in an antistatic bag in the 970 box all this time. Its probably something to do with windows xp but this is basicaly a rig that I want to practice overclocking with and not an actual work/ gaming rig so I wouldnt want to spend 100$ on a copy of windows vista or 7

Nope, I plugged the monitor into the gpu ports but the display only takes vga so I had to use a vga to dvi adapter, even if I plugged it into the integrated video port it should have installed ccc

Not necessarily. Either way, that still doesn't solve your problem. What is the make of the R7-240? I had a R9-270 that wouldn't accept the R9-270 driver. Turned out it was a new (at that time) R7-370 that was branded as a R9-270. I had to use the R7-370 driver for it to install.

I was thinking about that since it does not look like any r7 240 thats on sale but when it was paired with my a10-6700 , in speecy it said HD(insert number that I forgot) + r7 240 so I assumed it was an r7 240. This is an older pick of it in my old setup: http://imgur.com/MNZAMw5, I dont have speecy on the overcloking rig and I doubt it would work since no drivers but in the amd catalyst install manager logs it says: Hardware info:
Name: AMD Radeon Graphics Processor
Manufacurer: Advanced micro devices
Device ID: 0x6611
Existing packages: AMD catalyst install manager etc (although they dont show up :/ )
I don't know if that's useful info though

Gpu-Z is blank and does not display any information, im guessing thats because the gpu does not have drivers yet. Are there any programs that detect your gpu and install an appropriate driver automatically?

-Edit I found the ven and dev numbers in device manager and it definitely is an R7 240, back to the drawing board :/

GPU-Z is blank? Can you post a screenshot of the GPU-Z window?
Blank I've never seen.

There's always a driver loaded. Even if it is just the Windows default driver.

Heres a picture: http://imgur.com/Kb3qUsx, am I running the wrong version of gpu-z or doing something wrong?

No. GPU-Z wouldn't run if it was the wrong version for your OS. I'm totally stumped. Never seen anything like that. Does the card work except for the low resolution? It has to be a Win XP thing. But I don't know why. Do you have all the XP updates that were offered before MS quit supporting it?

It was an accounting computer before I repurposed it as my overclocking pc so idk about the updates but when I connected it to the internet it said it was working on updates so I guess it has all necessary updates. The gpu was working on 1080p on my old rig

MS stopped supporting updates long ago for XP. It probably is trying to access support from a defunct server. Have you considered moving to Win7? Any OS newer than 7 might be problematic with that old of a system. Win7 can still be found used on places like ebay. And it will still be supported until sometime in 2018.

This isn't my main pc, I wanted to use an older pc to practice overclocking without the risk of burning/ screwing up my main computer so I never planned on investing any money on it especially since the harware is mostly obsolete, the gpu and peripherals were all lying around with no use before.
I guess drivers just can't be installed on this pc because ow win xp, also believe you also helped me out a while back when I was first getting into pc building, thx for all your help :) (just remembered, if I couldnt install r7 240 drivers how will I find the ati xpress 200 drivers)
