" Some people also say the "Is AMD sacrificing IQ for performance?" article is biased. If anything, it absolves AMD's of any accusations of doing the thing indicated in the title and the article's conclusion clearly illustrates this. " If there was no issue then there was no reason to publish such an article so you can see in how it would relegate said article into what blatantly seems like another AMD hate montage.

There was an issue, people have known since the initial reviews that the IQ was a bit off, but that article showed that it wasn't AMD trying to get more performance out of their cards. It showed that it was an honest bug, not a cheat to get higher performance.

My first GPU was a 9800GT, It died after quite a while but while I had it, not a single problem, and I was an idiot I didn't even update my drivers ._. I've thankfully learned more about computers, I now have an XFX HD 5850, my drivers crash all the time it's ridiculous, sometimes my card itself screws up, I'm not a fan of XFX I had this one as a replacement from their other faulty card and it's happening again..

Err... people tend to forget or perhaps completely ignore the fact that for a graphics card to work there are quite a few bits that need to interface with each other.

Windows, DX, graphics drivers, other devices drivers, motherboard, motherboard drivers, motherboard settings, etc etc.

I have had both ATI and NVIDIA cards over the years and never had much trouble with either. Whenever there was a problem, I did some proper troubleshooting and managed to resolve the issue. Yes sometimes it was a driver, sometimes it was the damned antivirus, a firewall, a rogue program, a motherboard BIOS, etc etc.

Stop blaming the manufacturers and if you don't like the PC world, just go buy a Mac! (or a big mac!) Like someone said before... it sees to be the interface between the keyboard and the chair!

If that's directed towards me, I have a Mac, and it it's works mostly without issue, but I prefer Windows. Beyond that, the latest driver isn't any different from the previous versions, all the same issues are still present.

im gonna say power supply !!! I own 2 6870s and a 7970 as well as a 6850, NO ISSUES... now my g/f has a 5870eyefin ed. and gets bluescreens all the time... go figure

LOL. The irony of that. My Nvidia driver issue has been a 320M in a Mac!

Wow, I missed a lot....

My recent AMD(ATI) cards have been 9600AIW, 9700, x1800xt, and the 5750. none of these cards gave me any problems other then the x1800xt once. Had an issues with the dual screen combo I was running. I updated the drivers and it fixed the issue. Only recent Nvidia card I've had recently was an 8800GS. But I had no more problems with that card then any of my others. I just got a GTX460 and I'm expecting the same thing. The drivers of today are rather good, go back to the days of the ATI Rage cards if you want bad drivers.

Things can get borked sometimes. If you have an issue try removing the driver, sweep the driver out and then try again. Should fix any driver issue.

My history with ATI is mixed:

Rage 128 Pro (infamous)
Riva TNT2 (32 MB of VRAM!)
Geforce 2 (meh)
Geforce MX 440 (Mad Dog, died, replaced with BFG)
Geforce FX5200 (BFG, great card for it's time)
All In Wonder 9600 Pro (TV Tuner! Still in use)
X1600 Pro (Never used, new in box)
GeForce 8500GT (Overclocked it too hard and killed it, replaced with 9800GT)
GeForce 9800GT (Developed issues, RMA'd to XFX who replaced it with the 5670)
Quadro FX580 (Came with workstation)
HD 5670 (Good performer for it's time)
HD 6870 (Current)

I definitely have had serious problems with my XFX 6950's, my machine is about 9 months old
now but when I first built this thing I went through 3 cards, the HDMI would just stop working for
no reason at all.
Now just last week I install 12.3 drivers on a fresh windows install and every 10 to 15 minutes
the machine would just shut down on it's own, after re-installing windows again and installing
each program driver and waiting 20 to 30 minutes between them all I found the catalyst drivers
to be the problem so I'm using 12.2 instead of 12.3. and I also have been using ATI since my
first card 9600 AIW.

Exactly my point with the Mac. Usually more stable than PCs. (Usually - that is for our fellow user above who is having problems with NVIDIA drivers on his Mac! lol!).

I just want to point out that it is not always one side's fault when something does not work. Just because one person is having a problem with their card for example, it does not mean that the company is no good. If they were no good do you really think they would be selling like hotcakes and make millions of dollars every year?

Same goes for NVIDIA. Both companies have good products. They might have gotten the rotten stuff out the door some times, but everyone makes mistakes. If we look at the big picture, they have come a long way over the years.

Bottom line: Try to troubleshoot instead of going on a rant.

Thanks

True, all manufactures have duds, I just have not had a good experience with ATI, always have found their drivers to be unstable, even back when I had the AIW9600. Troubleshooted, not fixed, and incredibly annoying when you make your livelihood off of said PC.

+1, I love ATI cards I've never used anything else, but I won't pretend that their drives are good
they pretty much suck.

Only "driver" issues I've had in the last 2 years with my 5850s is sometimes a game isn't supported (specifically for crossfire) until a month or two later.

As far as technical fuckups, yeah I've had that amdkblahblah.sys BSOD, but for example recently it's been with GRID. And that game has crashed for a variety of reasons.

The vast majority of the time I just do a clean install and everything works just fine.

Well when I built my system everything was fairly new, so their was no help XFX or asus and
the fresh install didn't work either.
