Hello, I bought the AMD FX-4100 processor for my new gaming rig, but i've heard it's bad for gaming. So anyone that currently owns this CPU can leave me some feedback? i'd like to know how well it will performs. I will also overclock it to 4.0ghz
If it really sucks i'll have to buy a Phenom II but i don't think i have the money after buying all the other parts :l

Here is what i'm building:

Case: NZXT Phantom

Mobo: ASUS M5A97

CPU: AMD FX-4100

Memory: Crosair Vengance 16GB

GPU: ASUS ENGTX 580

PSU:Cooler Master Silent Pro M700

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB

What? The whole point of a gaming PC is to have a mid-range CPU and a fast-as-possible graphics card.
An FX-4100+GTX 580 would roflstomp a 2500k+GTX 550 in most games. (And one cannot even say that a FX 4100 WILL, per definition, bottleneck a 580 - in some cases it will, in others, it won't. Keeping the 4100 until faster Bulldozer CPU's come out is definitely a sensible option)

Sebax - if you can't return the processor and get your money back, keep it. It's not worth scrapping a 4100 for a replacement only until the next iteration of Bulldozer comes out. It will suffice for gaming - most...
Loose the GTX580, Loose the 700W PSU and Loose 8GB or RAM, all in all that build will cost a $1000 for a substandard system, when for a $1000 you can easily build a 2500K build.

550W-600W quality PSU is more than enough.
GTX 560TI or 570

Much better than the psuedo quad AMD purported to compete with the 2100 and a GPU that sucks power, contributing ten fold to global warming. Buy the GTX 580 for well over $400, in two years it is aged and inefficient in comparison to its direct replacement which will run cooler and use energy better, you will only be stuck with a today's eyecandy card that will be a expensive nothing with little re sale. Buy a more modest GPU and you can always carry it across to a secondary rig if you need one, or the fact you spent less than half it would cost you to get a GTX580, it will not be a tragic loss of money.

What's wrong with the GTX 580? That whole argument is messed up. Today's eye candy will always be out date with in a year it doesn't matter what video card you get. The 580 isn't that bad in power consumption and runs cooler than the 400 series which were known for running very hot. Once you get any hardware and put it in your computer it's value goes down the toilet. Good luck selling a 6970, GTX 570 or GTX 580 for a great price in three or four years. The GTX 580 is probably the best single GPU on the market. It beats the GTX 570 and the 6970. The only thing better is the dual GPU cards like the 6990 or the GTX 590.

Nothing is wrong with it, just paring a enthusiast card with a low end CPU and likely motherboard is hardly sound, the price of a 580 in this regard to its gains with such a low key CPU makes no sense, in most cases a better CPU + more reasonable GPU will yield better gains long term.

I take the value of a 580 in my country at around R6500+, the 570 is around R3500+, the gains are not worth it unless you are a serious enthusiast, in which case you will not be putting entry level componants with a high end GPU. For the price paid on a 580 + adequate PSU, then factor in what you spend on the other componants what you should be getting to what one gets doesn't add up.

For the money 2 XFX 6950 for 450.00 newegg, will beat the 580gtx all day and cheaper to boot.

No not really. The GTX 580 is alot faster than the 6950 and you can't compare a 300 dollar video card to a 500 dollar video card. Some people want the best of the best and the 580 is the best if your going to get a single gpu video card.

If you would do 2 xfx 6950 for 450 that would be a waste when you can do 2 evga superclocked gtx 560 ti for 440.00 and this was single gpu and the gtx 580 doesn't take that much power i have meter on m pc and with the amd overclocked in game im around 650 watt. sli is going to be way more than that. There not one ati card that can stand up to nvidia in there price point. Again not one single gpu can even come close to the 580 and the gtx 570 goes up to the 6970. .

6950 cf performs better than 560ti sli :fou:

I understand if anyone wants a single card the 580gxt is the one to get but this card at it's cheapest is
499.00, The XFX 6950 in crossfire would cost 450.00 about 50 dollars cheaper then the 580gtx and can
beat it all day like I said.

no one is hating on the gtx580, they are hating on the poor choice of AMD cpu, which will bottleneck the crap out of that video card. the fx6100 or 8120 wont see any difference, they both suck for games, most people are aware of that, the rest of you that refuse to see the truth are just AMD fanboys that refuse to look at facts, good for you , enjoy your bottlenecked system. Its pointless pairing a gtx580 with a low end FX cpu, that is what everyone is trying to say, not that the gtx580 is crap.

this system will last for some months or may be year, so no need to go for new cpu now.
But If you can get a replacement/refund of cpu+motherboard then go for it and switch to sandy now, to be future proof.

:non: bro....take a right decision....currently microsoft released update for bulldozer processor to increase performance in gaming by 25%...here the link

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2592546/

good luck 😀

Yea and it didn't come close to 25%. It still only gave a very small performance increase.

Where did you get this 25% from, Microsoft didn't say anything about 25%.

Intel fan boys like to make it a huge number so they can feel better about them self's and that they spent 4 times as much for there i7 system. 25% its more like 3% and pile-driver is going to be the come back. Its brand new chip and no one can give it time to come in to its own. They are selling out for some reason. I don't see i7 chips sold out every week. Intel has had the same problem but no one made this big of a deal out of it.

Because Intel has a better fabing system. They can keep up with demand and AMD can't. Yea that's right they fail at that too.

I've read most of this thread and read plenty of folks calling the AMD FX-4100 a dog, low end CPU and other really off the mark comments from people that most likely don't own a FX-4100. Take it from me OP the 4100 is plenty of cpu for gaming and will not bottleneck anything if OC'd properly. Mine is OC'd to just under 4.8GHz and paired with an AMD HD6850. This rig plays every game so far with superior fps and smooth play. I have a sealed loop hydro cooling Corsair h60 unit that is keeping mine under 50 Celsius during heavy gaming and load. Stress tested with prime95 for 30 minutes and never went over 50 degrees. My other rig has a AMD 965 Phenom that isn't performing well due to a lightning strike but if I could compare the two say apples to apples the FX wins. So be confident that your rig will be fine and any upgrade will only be necessary if your loaded with money and want to spend some extra cash.
