Hey Everyone,

After reading the best CPU's for the money October article (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106.html), I was intrigued to hear about AMD's FX 9590 dropping in price. I decided to check it out on Newegg and found that the prices were comparable between the Intel and AMD chips, but that the main specs of the AMD chip were significantly higher. I am planning on building a gaming rig in the next month or two and I'm really going for the most value for my dollar. In all reality, I was planning on getting Intel's i5 4670k because I've heard that most games aren't able to take advantage of the i7's full capabilities, but now I'm wanting to find out more. Here are both CPU's pages on Newegg:

$339.99 - Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz Quad-Core Desktop Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116901

$389.99 - AMD FX-9590 Vishera 4.7GHz Eight-Core Desktop Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113351

My questions are:
1). Which processor would provide better gaming performance for the money? Why?

2). How can AMD's numbers (Clock rate, CPU cores) be so much higher than Intel's?

3). Can most gaming take full advantage of AMD processors where it cannot for Intel i7 processors?

Thanks for everybody's input. I appreciate it.

Solution
As can be seen from the above benchmarks, despite the fact that the FX-9590 has 8 physical core vs 4 physical and 4 logical cores of the i7-4770k and the fact that the FX-9590's Turbo Core speed of 5.0GHz is 1.1GHz higher than the i7-4770k's Turbo Boost speed of 3.9GHz, the FX-9590 is not a clear winner.

In fact, the FX-9590 looses more often to the Core i7-4770k than it wins. While it can be argued that the FX-9590 can simply be overclocked for better performance, people need to remember that the FX-9590 is simply an overclocked FX-8350 that has been able to reach up to 5.0GHz. Therefore, the overclocking potential could be very limited.

On the other hand, the i7-4770k is simply running at stock speed. While it's overclocking...

This is some of the dumbest crap I've ever heard

can we just test this two in rendering / animation? because some of us here are doing that stuff. for me im still not convinced either i take amd or intel. i don't see here in forum that do benchmark in 3Ds Max / Maya / Vray / MR / Maxwell Rendering / Animation if someone there can you please post the result. this cpu is not all about Gaming.

Thank You. :bounce:

Fanboys will be fanboys. I say we just let them be fanboys. I do have to say that Intel's i7-4770k is a better choice because of many reasons.

1. The performance you can get with the lower TDP of 84w vs. what the Amd needs to get its performace, 220w.

2. The fact that it has 8 cores doesn't change a whole lot. It doesn't make a HUGE difference in the vast majority of games out there on the market currently. True more cores will be better for those highly threaded applications but if you are buying a 9590 for Professional Video Editing and such, i personally would rather go with a Xeon because a TDP of 220w plus all that heat and the need to be hydro cooled, it just makes the 9590 less appealing for a Professional Workstation Grade Rig. Very true that Xeons are quite costly but i would say that is similar to the way Professional Grade Workstation GPUs i.e. Quadro vs Geforce or FirePro vs HD xxxx/Rx xxx. You are paying more for the needs of a Workstation Machine. Xeons are built for workstations/servers. Quadros are made for the same purpose, same goes with FirePro. Geforce are made for consumers, same goes for the HD xxxx/Rx xxx.

3. I have always used Intel, but this does not go to say that i hate AMD/will never try them. I really have nothing against either Company. I have heard that most people that want the best stability/longevity will go for Intel. I don't really know why either.

Well i have to go for now.

Hello OP,
I am actually looking at these 2 CPU's myself for my next build and have to say I am torn between them. I have used both AMD and Intel CPU's and have loved them both equally. In fact, my old gaming rig has been running an AMD Phenom 2 x6 1100T Black Edition for the last 3 years and has been rocking (even played BF4 at medium settings with my old GeForce 550ti's).

Honestly, I think my ultimate choice will come down to the fact that the Haswell i7-4770k has built in video which will be critical for me as my build will have to be done in stages while I save money for my graphics cards. This will also help out in the event my vid cards die on me and I still need to use the PC (as long as my mobo has support for onboard video, which it does). The FX-9590, while enticing with the 8 cores and higher clock speeds doesn't give me a redundancy I would like to have in my system.

I wish you the best in making your decision and I hope you get tons of joy in whatever CPU you decide to go with 🙂 Let us know how it works out!

Please dont consider the 9590.
I wouldn't even consider any of the 9xxx CPUs. It was a bad marketing scheme by AMD. It should instead have been named 8370 and 8390, because that is what you would do with higher binned products.
That said, I myself wouldn't go with any AMD product that is currently on the market above the fx 8320.

I do believe that your budget and usage is require before anyone should guide you any further.
Next time, please make your own threads, there you can expect better experience as people would have a bigger focus on your subject.

1) I did a comparison between (performance + cooler) vs. (money + electricity bills) and got Intel i7-4770K as the best choice.
You also could buy a i7-4770 if you don´t think about overclock, that have more instructions, specially for AES cryptography.
If the main problem is money, and the focus is gaming, i suggest you to buy a i5 and you´ll be fine.

2) "Power is nothing without control." - The Intel ones have best architectural solution. I prefer AMD for GPU, but for CPU they are far away from the best. AMD had his good times in CPU market many years ago... But remember: its my particular opinion / knowledge.

3) Some few games are developed optimized for AMD CPU (part of them are designed for PS4 and XBOX ONE), but MOST part of PC Games runs better at Intel processors, because uses only 1 or max. of 2 cores. A processor with 4 or 8 physical cores are not used for most of the games. If your budget is low, I suggest you to think about.

I did the upgrade bellow last December. My budget was fine, when I decided to spend the money that I will have spend in a new gaming console on my desktop upgrade.

December 2013 upgrade specs (most parts got on sale):

Intel Core i7 4770K 3.50GHz (1150 LGA)
+ Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H-CF (Motherboard)
+ Noctua NH-U14S for Intel LGA 2011,1156,1155,1150 and AMD AM2/AM2+/AM3/3+,FM1/2 Sockets, U Type, 6 Heatpipe,140mm (Excellent CPU Cooler)
+ Noctua Ultra Silent 140mm Fan NF-P14 FLX (Brown) (Second CPU Cooler Fan)
+ 16GB G.Skill DDR3 PC3-17000 2133MHz RipjawsX Series for Intel Z68/P67 (9-11-11) (Very Good Dual Channel Memory kit)
+ HIS 7950 IceQ Boost Clock 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E Graphics Card H795QC3G2M (Good AMD Graphics Card)
+ Samsung Electronics 840 Pro Series 2.5-Inch 256 GB SATA 6GB/s (Very Good Solid State Drive)
+ Noctua 140mm Premium Quiet Quality Case Cooling Fan NF-A15 PWM (Good Fan for ATX cases)

Note: In my country CPU temperatures and power consumption affects my decision much more then CPU prices only.

If you want to save money get the AMD. If you want a great chip get the Intel. The Intel is the only chip that meets Military Spec's. The AMD does not. Because of this you are paying for a better made chip, that can take more stress than the AMD.

Honetsly, the 4770K is a better all rounder...
Having a higher clock speed and more cores may look good on paper, but in real life its not as powerful as the 4770K,
In benchmarking it may match the i7 or beat it in some cases but most of them are beaten by the i7!
And the FX 9590 has a really high TDP which will need extensive cooling and a bigger psu.
But honestly they are both really good cpus and will easily handle most tasks!

I do agree.. mainly. The answer comes down to what you want to do, and the basics are that the i7 will beat the 9590 in resource hungry programs (e.g. ultra graphics gaming etc..) due to its hyper threading capabilities and raw power. Whereas the 9590 will manage multiple mediocre tasks better due to it having more cores and slightly higher clock speed. I myself use a 9590 in my all-rounder build due to me wanting to be able to handle multiple tasks smoothly. Also I use a larger PSU and cooling system so the mentioned disadvantages do not affect me.

Overall, choose a processor to suit your needs and requirements. Hope I've helped! :)

Well TheTechnoMage...
The 9590 is not hyperthreaded for a start making it not better in more "Hungry" Programs and the i7 does have more "power" than the 9590 and due to it not being hyperthreaded it cant use the full capability of its cores.
Im not an intel fanboy but im just stating the truth.

If you actually read what I put, I said "The i7 will beat the 9590 in power hungry programs." I admitted that the i7 was better in that area and the 9590 was not hyperthreaded. So.. take your truth with you... intel fanboy
