AMD FX-9590 unable to find stable clock settings

Been fiddling around with the 9590 for a few months and only have found stable settings as 4.2Ghz. I spent the money on this cpu and proper cooling unit and I want to get the most out of it. Plus I'm no whiz at clocking stuff in the bios, tried to learn a little but don't want to break my comp just randomly pushing buttons. Looking for a more seasoned/professional help so I don't have to watch my computer spontaneously combust or drag its feet until I buy a new cpu and/or motherboard.

So far I've tried:

-manualy setting voltage at 1.4v~1.5v, either locked up or didn't boot properly
-both lowering and raising the clock, locks up 4.4Ghz+
-changed on/off/auto various cpu features (turbo, cool and quiet, etc.)

My current rig is:

Tower: HAF-X Full ATX Tower
Cpu: AMD FX-9590
-Currently running at 4.2GHz

Cpu Cooler: Deepcool Captain 120
Mobo: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 R5 (Bios F2)
Graphics: EVGA GTX 980 Super-clocked ACX 2.0
RAM: Cosiar Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800)
-Currently running at 1333MHz

Power supply: CORSAIR RM Series RM 1000 1000w ATX12V v2.4
SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 120GB
SHDD: ST1000DX001-1NS162

I don't know if I would call anything under a 240mm a stable cooling system for that chip.

Deepcool Captain 120 is rated for 140w TDP cooling , FX 9590 is 220w TDP , therefore you are unable to cool it
FX 9590 at 4.2 Ghz is pretty much 140w TDP which is your cooler limit .
You need either a 240mm water cooling system , or a high end air cooler like NH-D14 , one you install a 220+ w TDP cooler you will be able to reach 4.7/5 Ghz operations normally ....

Please read the cooler TDP before buying any cooler to know if it will fit your CPU TDP .

So something like Cooler Master V8 GTS or Cryorig R1 Ultimate would be sufficant cooling for my volcano?

I have been playing around with this CPU and the Gigabyte GA990fxa-UD5 (rev 3.0) the last days. I had problems stabilizing the cpu as I didn't have time to search for and order a proper cooler and I use a CoolerMaster 212 Evo. After a lot of search I made the following conclusions:

1. It is very important to ensure that the VRMs on the motherboard are properly cooled as they overheat due to the high voltages/watts of the cpu. I have a HAF 932 and what I did was to invert the top fan to blow air in the case instead of pulling out and to add a fan on the pci slot above the graphics card pulling air out. Given that the latter is rare nowadays I would start by inverting the top fan.
2. Given that most 990FX motherboards were not initially designed for 220W load they have problems delivering the proper amount of power. For my mobo the setting that seems to be the most important is the VCore Loadline calibration which stabilizes the volts (or something like that I do not remember). Check this post http://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/zardon/amd-fx9590-5ghz-review-w-gigabyte-990fxa-ud5/6/. To make the long story short I put it in high as suggested in the aforementioned post.
3. It would be good to disable any setting that changes CPU frequency (e.g. Turbo, Cool n Quiet) and cpu voltage (e.g. C1E Support , Core C6 State). I have also enabled the HPC mode. The Cool n Quiet setting I will most probably re-enable it when I will be sure that my CPU is stable.

So with the above settings and decreasing the Vcore by 0.125 (1.392 @idle and 1.416 @load) I am currently checking stability @4.5 GHZ. After almost 2 hours with prime95 CPU temp 56C (from HWmonitor) and thermal margin from 11C to 13C. For sure I have to run it more hours but before it was freezing after 40-60 minutes.

General remark:
Most say that the 9590 is an overclocked 8350. There are several people with overclocked 8350s. Thus, there should be a set of settings that make 9590 stable for your cooler. Check some forums you may find someone with similar setup, but keep in mind that no cpu is similar to any other one.

I am sorry for the long answer but I want to help as much as possible. I was in the same situation with you (and I may still be, more testing is needed) and in most forums I could not find a helpful tip.

Cryorig R1 Ultimate is 250w TDP , so it is enough for the FX 9590 220w TDP , it has a ram height limit of 30-35 mm , so be sure that your ram has less than that height , or get Cryorig R1 Universal which has limitless memory height support and rated 240w TDP ...

^Go with the Cryorig unless you want to go with the Nh-D15.
