Hi,

So I over clocked my AMD a10-4655m for some time now using AMD overdrive reaching 2.8ghz instead of the stock 2ghz. But today I was playing ARMA 3 and decided to see how much of the CPU it uses. Looking at the stats once the game is running and is the main process the over clocking goes back down to 2000 and sometimes even 1000hz wtf? It never goes above to the over clocked level I achieve when not in game. So I decided to try stranded deep and a few other games not just ARMA and still it is not allowing the overclock? It must have been like this for years and my overclocking only working when not running a game. This is no use as ARMA 3 really needs that extra boost. Ive looked at a few things but does anyone know or heard of anything that block AMD overdrive over clocking when a game is running this would be a huge help and the first time I've refereed to a forum for answers. Please help.

Based on this picture your issue is throttling due to heat. As someone has explained, that's 8*C thermal margin, low is bad. 8*C thermal margin means you're running really damn hot, nearly 92*C/200*F if one assumes 100*C is the absolute maximum designed...
Well first of all its totally normal the your cpu goes down to 1ghz and back up, you can control that setting in the power option. You can for example set your minimum cpu state at 100% so it never goes down. Now for your observations, when you check the cpu performance is your game alt tabbed?

The minimum CPU state is set at 100% and Maximum 100% and this works fine running anything else except games, with the CPU staying between 2300mhz to 2818mhz on all 4 cores. I have the power plan all set up for that. I tried both, first time I alt+tab the game and looked at AMD overdrive, when i did this it was ranging from 800mhz to the stock 2000mhz but after 5 seconds of the game being alt+tab full screen and having the overdrive as the main screen it would proceed back to its normal 2300mhz-2800mhz overclocked range. To check more i have ran all the games in windowed mode with AMD overdrive showing the first core (pretty much all run the same) to the left of the game window and I could see while playing it had the same effect and clicking on the amd overdrive window it would then increase again back to its 2300-2800 levels. Really weird but I think it must be something stopping amd overdrive fully co operating with the games when running. I would love to record video but bit of a noob on the editing side. Its a really weird problem that I could really do with fixing.

I have already tried that. Its ot that its not overclocking. AMD overdrive is over clocking for everything pretty much on stable 2818mhz on all cores fine. Its actually in-game regardless of alt+tabbed or if the game and over drive are windowed the CPU speed drops to below 2000mhz and below (2000mhz stock) so its something to do with the games actually blocking the AMD overdrive. Not sure if its a setting or what?

This is while running stranded deep. You see how the clocks have gone down to 1500 and sometimes even to 800. When I took the first screenshot no game was running only chrome yet i was achieving 2300-2800 but when i play a game demanding or not im getting stupid clock speeds like this. I am asking if someone knows a setting that may be stopping the overclocking working with steam or games from steam as it works on everything else.

Not the temps, I have a cooling fan and the stock fan is super great. When a game has been going for a long time the cpu temp will always be below 20, GPU not so good at around 50.

Sarcasm? BJSM you may just be right, I have been fiddling around. Ive noticed my GPU temp goes up to 60C and never higher but its at this point the CPU clock speeds fall back. It seems like the GPU heats up pretty quick even with only 30% usage. How can i decrease the heat from my GPU its not really overcclocked and never get to 100% so what are the best options. Under volt it? increase bus times? or reduce mhz for GPU or a combination, would be a great help.

I know this is a long shot now but if anyone can provide me with the stock settings for amd radeon hd 7620g + 8600m dual graphics i would be sooooo happy. That way i can lower the gpu temp and keep the cpu over clocking

Just to note, I believe you're misreading the temperature of your CPU. The "thermal margin" is not the temperature the CPU is at. To quote AMD, the "Thermal Margin indicates how far the current operating temperature is below the maximum operating temperature of the processor". So the lower the value, the hotter the CPU. In the screenshot you provided of the throttling, the thermal margin is only 8.5 degrees Celsius.

I'd thoroughly recommend you checking out Damric's guide, "An Understanding of Temperature on AMD CPUs and APUs", on this very site, as it looks like your chip is running a lot hotter than you think. This may or may not be the cause of your throttling issues.

Thanks everyone. Feel kinda stupid now with not realising it was running hot. Thanks for your replies. To keep you updated I have read hp are crap motherboard's that overheat. Im taking it apart today cleaning the fan and addidng new thermal paste. A 5 fan cooler and extra extractpr fan is on its way. Thank you everyone
