I recently replaced my Phenom II 820 x4 with a Phenom II 945 x4. My motherboard is a M2N78-LA (Violet6) and the computer us a HP Pavilion p6404y. Since replacing the unit is very laggy and boarder line unusable. The unit booted up fine and did an auto install of the software. The 945 was a used cpu. Is there a Bios update or setting that needs to change? Or could it just be a bad cpu?

windows 7.. found a Bios update its helped performance, still light lag but not bad. However, now the fan randomly goes nuts. For about 20-30 seconds the rpms will max. Checking the temps the CPU isn't hot. It doesn't seem to matter on use, light, heavy or idle

That sounds like either a BIOS (firmware) or motherboard (hardware) issue, difficult to check which it is. You could try changing the fan settings for the CPU in the BIOS, see if that helps. It could also be faulty temperature readings (a faulty sensor), but that doesn't explain the temporary change in fanspeed.

Weird issue. If all else fails, try a fresh install of Windows, but that's very unlikely to change the fan issue, although it could help with the "lag" you are experiencing.

ok, thank you! I am going to open the case and verify its the cpu and not the fan in the power supply. Bios firmware would make sense, being it didn't do it until i updated
