AMD Phenom 9850 BE - Too hot!

Hey all,

Recently I discovered my Phenom 9850 BE to be running far too hot. I have always known it to run quite hot but I did not know it was this bad. I recently moved everything into a new case and installed an aftermarket cooler, a Silenx EFZ-100HA1. I applied Arctic Silver 5 properly and the cooler is situated properly on the CPU. At idle I get around 47-55 Celsius, and at load I reach into 66-71 Celsius. This is extremely concerning and I even wonder if my temp sensor is on the fritz. I am running out of ideas of what could be happening. I do not notice any overheating shutdowns or BSOD's, but the temp is still bothering me. Below is a screencap of my temps at load:

71 is, I think, high normal for a CPU, not sure of the exact temps for that one. Doesn't AS5 take time to 'set,' so temps will drop after a while?

-_- The CPU temp diode on the Phenoms was screwy till they fixed it late in the C2 Phenom II 965. C3 chips are generally fine in that regard, but the original Phenoms are still screwy 😀. Besides, that's not exactly the best CPU cooler for AMD CPUs

Anyway, the CPU temp is generally your motherboard thermal diode on the socket, so yeah that seems a bit toasty. I say get a tower CPU cooler or do something about your case airflow since it's certainly not optimal for that CPU cooler.

If in this case, it is not a buggy sensor Then at this point, I don't recommend air coolers.

If you've got the cash, you may want to search out a water cooler.

Hopefully It is just a buggy sensor, even though that still isn't very nice.

What kind of case do you have? What is the rest of your system.

Mobo: ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe Wifi-AP
CPU: AMD Phenom 9850 BE 2.5ghz
RAM: 2x 2gb OCZ Reaper HPC
GPU: ASUS EAH Radeon 3850 X2 1G
Sound: M-Audio Delta 1010
PSU: Diablotek 600w (this is temporary)

I guess the real question here is, should I keep pumping some money into this system to cool it, oc it, etc. or should I build anew? Would it be worth it to keep working with this build to squeeze power out of it, or would it be wise to upgrade?

Eh? You have it in a rack mount case? That's.... um... interesting. Anyway you have a nice motherboard. You definitely need to upgrade your cooler but it's hard to say what would be best in an enclosure like that. I say get a decent case like an Antec 300 and a good 120mm tower cooler. With a BIOS update you can update your CPU to a newer Phenom II as well, but for now increasing the cooling and overclocking the CPU may be enough for you. The graphics solution is a little dated as I myself was running two 3850s a year and a half ago.

If you want to keep that case you may want to put in something like a cooler master TX3

it's an affordable 92mm cooler that should fit. You can get one at your local CompUSA.

I have it in a rackmount case because it is in a rack with other audio gear. I work in the audio field and have to move my gear around a lot so I keep it racked up in there. I know it is not the best solution for airflow, etc. but its suitable. I am definitely in the market for a super nice cooler. I like the cooler master you recommended, but I have also been looking at the new self-contained liquid coolers like the Corsair H's and the Antec Kuhlers. Although, I am not sure how I would fit them into this case. I was under the impression I could not upgrade much because my socket is AM2+, do the newer Phenoms run on that? (thought most were AM3 now). Basically, if I can put a bit of money into this build that would be nice, just to upgrade a few things. On a side note, I was playing a game earlier (no crashes or anything) and I noticed my temps getting ridiculous! Below is another screencap of them:

I am beginning to wonder why I havent shutdown or frozen or BSOD'd yet. Nevertheless, I still want to look into getting more sane temps.

Just measured it up, technically I think I could also cram a Noctua NH-D14 in there. Hopefully... lol.

The thing with a bigger tower cooler is that it will be limited by the air exiting out the back and it looks like that case only has room in the back for two smaller fans. Anyway, AM3 CPUs work in AM2+ boards as long as the Motherboard has a BIOS to support it. They can even run in some AM2 boards but that's not recommended ^_^. Anyway, if you Visit the ASUS website and look at CPU support for your board you will see that you can drop in a newer CPU like a Phenom II X4 955 BE. If it was me I would just get a better CPU cooler first to see how far that CPU will go and still be under a safe temp. If that wasn't enough, then I'd think about getting a new CPU.

I should add that the prices of X6 CPUs will likely drop once Bulldozer is released. Bulldozer CPUs will not be compatible with AM2+ boards like yours. I didn't check if your board has BIOS to support X6 CPUs, but it should since I saw all the X4 CPUs on it's CPU support list 😛

If you look at that frosty tech review posted above and flip to the third page where they test it with a 125W load with a similar heating pattern to an AMD chip, you will see that even with its fan on high its still got a deviation of 35C over ambient so given your motherboard temps the CPU temps unfortunately look about right.

Since you have an AM2+ chip you actually have a lot of cooler options since the mounting kit for it is the same as AM3 ones and 99% of coolers you can get right now will fit it fine.


One primary concern of mine, with a motherboard/case temp like that you will always be running fairly hot no matter what cooler you put in there, whats the room temp vs the motherboard temp reading? Because coolers work off of a difference in temp if you can drop your case temp by 10C you will drop your CPU and GPU temps by about the same amount which would help you a lot.

Temp in my room is probably 75 F (with Mobo temp being 93 F). So the case airflow is not good. I really would like to keep my rackmount and have good flow. So maybe I will have to break out the dremel and add a few fans. I will stick with the CPU I have now and try and cool it down. And YES the Phenom II X6's are supported so later on I will have to drop one of those puppies in.

Any other ideas on coolers? Im pretty sure the NH-D14 is awesome, but I am concerned about it fitting in the case.

EDIT: Just took off the top of the rack case and the mobo temp drops (in line with the CPU) from 93F to 82F. Need to figure out this case I guess.

I have the same CPU (9850 BE, Asus MB, 2 SATA HDs, SATA DVD writer) overclocked at 10%. I use the Arctic Cooler 7 pro 64 and it stays in the low 40c temp. NOW, however, the Arctic fan died and get this: with only a side case fan and NO CPU FAN, the temps are in the mid 50s celsius (~131 F). Looking for a replacement fan before I go and get another heatsink/fan combo again.

Give your cooler the finger ... and see how it feels. If you don't pull back a seared, smoking nub of a digit I'd say you are okay.

Otherwise, H2O cooling would look to be your best option, though, circulating some fresh air in that case (got a drill handy?) would certainly help.
