Actually, you guys are all wrong about FLOPS because "OPS" could simply mean ops/operation-s- and adding "per second" is therefore not redundant.

Heh, it seems I'm behind the curve, there's already many Nehalem
systems on the top500 list, including an SGI ICE cluster at no. 6.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when 6/8-core i7/i9s
are released. Given the difference in performance & no. of cores
between Pleiades and Jaguar, it wouldn't take much for a Nehalem
system to grab the top spot. I'll be surprised if Jaguar is still
at the top in 6 months' time.

[citation][nom]carl0ski[/nom]when will we start seeing GPU powered super computersa lone Radeon 5850 is about 2Pflops ?[/citation]
You are thinking Tera Flops, not Peta Flops. A Radeon may be ab;e to perform 2 TeraFLOPS, but most certainly not 2 PetaFLOPS. Though if it could that would be one hellava GPU!!!

[citation][nom]MustWarnOthers[/nom]To be honest, I doubt even this computer can run Crysis effectively. Judging by the fact that a 3 year old game still can't run at max settings on even some of the highest end consumer hardware, it's pretty obvious it's just a poorly coded piece of shit.[/citation]
get a new computer. and stop crying.

i'd like to add. Crysis, if you haven't played it, which you probably haven't, is the best looking and most realistic game made to date. therefore, crytek made a choice to make it "scalable": to make it look perfect at max when future technology and machines can run it down the road. Crytek knew this because they did the exact same thing with Far Cry.

so you, my friend, are ignorant.

Re my earlier comment, as it happens SGI's new Altix UV has been
announced today (friend emailed me minutes ago, ironic timing),
as expected it's a shared-memory supercomputer using i7 XEONs,
with support for the newer 6/8-core i7s aswell:

http://www.sgi.com/company_info/newsroom/press_releases/2009/november/altix_uv.html
http://www.sgi.com/products/servers/altix/uv/

The initial product supports up to 2048 cores and 16TB RAM using
a 15GB/sec interconnect (NumaLink5). Remember this is a _single
system_ running one OS instance, it's not a cluster. Future
products will support up to 262,144 cores (32,768 sockets).

The Origin3K using NumaLink3 supported up to 1.5TB/sec I/O (the
system I have), so it should be interesting to see what Altix UV
can do with an interconnect that is 5X faster. The STREAM numbers
should be amazing.

Btw, a note about GPU computing: without 64bit fp support, many
of those products are useless for scientific apps. NVIDIA is
working on this, but they've a ways to go yet. Plus, some tasks
require continuous access to massive amounts of data, something
GPU-based solutions will not offer any time soon.

And for those who only care about Crysis, just get an Octane III
with four i7 XEONs and four Quadro FX5800 cards - that will run
it just fine. Twice. In one box. ;)

How many years did it take PCs to move from 1 gigaflop to 1 teraflop (assuming the GPUs really can do general purpose computing at that speed)?
This may give a rough guess on when PCs will reach the pedaflop level.
The Bunyip Beowulf cluster was able to get 1 gigaflop for $1000 in 2000.
So, I'm guessing we can see Jaguar performance in PCs in 2020+

[citation][nom]lordcrazex[/nom]one of the many remarkable achievements; brought to you by AMD[/citation]

Actually brought to you by the company with too much money who can build a farm like that.

What will be interesting is to see Intels 8 core (16 threads) and AMDs 12 cores FLOPS performance.

I love it. Can it play Crysis lives!!!

So, can it? Hahahahahahahah!!!
