Originally, I had planned to get a Athlon Sempron 3100+, then I realized it was the low end of their newer products.

If I'd only be using 32-bit applications, is there an advantage in using a 64 bit processor? Would the processor work in normal Windows XP, or would you need the 64 bit edition?

What I'm really asking is this: should I upgrade to Athlon 64, or a sempron 3100+?

You don't need a 64-bit OS, none of us are running one. The Athlon 64 is a 32-bit CPU with 64-bit extensions that go unused on most of today's software. All those great and popular benchmarks you've seen showing AMD's clear superiority are 32-bit.

A64, whichever model you can afford.
