So i just got my HIS IceQ X 7850 after having good experiences with their 6570. Idle temps are averaging about 50°C, load being around 70 (highest ive seen today). The reason this concerns me is because HIS advertises their fan as 28db and my 6570 which i overclocked a TON didnt make a sound. The 7850 has a larger fan which should help with the noise but it doesnt seem to do anything in terms of noise. Any help? Is it defective or just a loud cooler from the getgo

Catalyst shows me the fan speed and the temps. When i set the fan speed to auto it goes about 40% which is rather loud and averages 50°C idle. I've manually turned it down to the nearly silent 20% and i average 49°C. weird how that works. It really becomes a problem when the fan speed ramps up to 60% when playing a demanding game like ARMA 2 or Far Cry 3

Right now i have it manually set to 20 and its quiet at 49°C avg. but im hesitant to play a game at this fan rate

Hey,

Did you try a custom fan curve? If not, then download a program like MSI afterburner and then try setting a custom fan profile. Start with setting a fan profile that uses rather high fan speeds and then play a game or run a benchmark to make sure the temperatures are ok. Then lower the fan curve (custom fan profile) and test it again. Keep lowering the fan speeds in the custom fan profile, and make sure to watch your temps.

Hope this helps!

If it is a fixed fan rate, then i would not play with it set at 20, as if it is fixed it will stay at that and you risk having the temps go too high. The custom fan curve would solve the issue by dynamically changing the fan speed according to the temperature. The difference between a custom fan curve and "Auto" is that you get to choose how the fan is to behave at a certain temperature.

._. thats is why i dont want to play a game at that fixed rate. I can bump it up to 30 before it gets a little too noisy, 40 is where it gets a little too much
