AMD Radeon R9 290x HDMI not working for 3 display setup

In my newest build I went with the amd radeon r9 290x to run my 3 way set up, as one of the promised features was I could use 2 DVIs and 1 HDMI to do so. Plugged in all three and the HDMI won't work. Any advice on how to get this operational?

hi i have just done a 3 monitor setup with a r9 290 amd stock card. i have 2 monitors using dvi an one using hdmi. i didn't use any adapters.
you have to play with the settings in amd catalyst. but it does work with out a active adapter.

It depends on which card you have. How many outputs do you have and what are they. My card has 2x mini DP ports, 1x HDMI and 1x DVI and I can use all of them. Some cards will have a 5th output, another DVI port. If you have one of these, you can usually only use 2 out of the 3 of the HDMI/DVI ports and the remaining monitors must be on Display port.

They improved the output logic on the Hawaii chips so that limit is no longer there, with Hawaii 3 DVI/HDMI is possible.

Went out and snagged an HDMI to mini display port convertor, and the system is still only allowing two screens to be active at a time. I can switch between the screens, but can't get all three working at once. Ideas?

For the third monitor you have to have an ACTIVE adapter, i dont know what you use, but an example:

say that you have HDMI, DP, AND DVI.

the first two screens you can use DVI HDMI OR DP depends on how many connections the card have.

But for the 3'rd screen, you will need an active adapter, for example an DP to DVI/-orHDMI active adapter.

you cannot run eyefinity (three monitors) without an active adapter. It's just the way it is.

well, if you are right then how come it doesnt work?. It's the most logic reason i see. However, it may be something to do with the driver then, or did they "promise" this and are working on it? any links you can give me that says this is actually true?

Lol, no need to answer that. I found it... Anyways i would try an active adapter anyways.

Yes, i read that. It seems that you are right. But i am atm running 3 screens as we speak. And my setup is: two dvi-d to hdmi adapters and the last adapter is an active mini DP to dvi, and it is working so i would have tried the same.

I am using 2x6870 :bounce: haha, im kinda lazy when it comes to buying new stuff for my computer. But the sickest thing is that i can play every game in the world on medium, and tha'ts enough for me. Do not need a overprized card just to get a few more pixels/antialiasing.

Question: do you think that it is worth the money to buy a new 290x? and would you prefer a 8350 AMD CPU or AMD FX 9590?

That's why you need the active adapter. Only the new 290 (and the Sapphire Flex cards) can do three.

I'd like to get a 290, but the 7950 is more then enough for me. I'm saving for other things right now so I'll worry about upgrading again when I need to. 8320 is the chip to get. Just bump up the multiplier to get to the 8350 and above.

This was the answer I found to my problem , makes more sense than juggling displays or powering monitors up in a different order.. YMMV.

After wasting many hours and trips to return and replace monitors. What I have found after tearing apart my system is that the "screen resolution" and CCC can read the monitor name and some basic parameters from the monitor. It displays the monitor name in the desktop manager but the card driver has no clue and maps them as generic PNP monitors. That is why I could not "save the configuration" or activate the 3rd monitor.

I found the answer just before I was going to rip out the card and toss it. I was looking in the "Screen Resolution" window. It would see all 3 of my monitors but not let me activate more than 2 no matter what combination. In looking in the "advanced settings" on the monitor tab it showed my monitors as generic PNP monitors.

In a "what the hell" moment I put in the monitor driver disk and installed them. Now the monitors under the Advanced Settings screen are identified as what they really are (no generic pnp) and after a reboot the 3rd monitor now works. No adapter and acts like a 3rd extended desktop exactly as advertised.

This may just be wild supposition on my part..

I think that the HDMI port is by some logic tied to the first DVI port. I did notice that when I put a UltraWide(2540x1080) on the first port it also reported that my TV in the HDMI port also had a 2540x1080 recommended resolution but it would not let me activate it. Plugging in a new 1080p monitor on the first DVI port caused the HDMI port to report that my TV had a 1920x1080 recommended resolution but I still could not activate it. When I installed the monitor drivers to where the device manager recognized them properly ( the TV still says Generic, but its on the HDMI ) it will let me activate the TV on the HDMI as the 3rd monitor. It probably works because the TV does not error when set up with the same parameters as the first display ( first DVI ) 1920x1080. Just a guess but it did work for me and does not seem to rely on magic..

The OP was asking about an R9, they support 3 without adapters.
