This is my first time posting, sorry if this isn't in the correct place.

I have had my computer for over a year and i'm still encountering the same problem. Whenever I play games my computer black screens and I have to hard reset it. I saw a video on Youtube for a fix using MSI Afterburner. All he did was move core clock, memory clock, and power limit all to their minimum settings.

Which I know limits the power of my computer but I would rather have a computer under-performing than a computer that turns off every 30 minutes. After I had made those changes my computer worked fine, I had no issues.

Just recently I updated windows 10 and the issues came back, I just figured settings in MSI Afterburner were changed. I opened up Afterburner and noticed all my settings were the same except for one which was "Temp. Limit" I cant remember if it was even there to begin with but it is now at +94 and whenever I try to adjust it my computer goes haywire, screen freezes, goes black, and then a minute later goes back to normal. I could have sworn it was grayed out before or was just not there at all to begin with, I just cannot remember it.

Also, whenever I put it to 0 and then press apply it goes back to +94 I cannot adjust it at all. Can someone throw tips my way on fixing either MSI Afterburner or fixing my GPU, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you for your time.

Not that I am aware of. I don't even know how to get into the BIOS haha and I am the only one who uses this computer.

I downloaded the one that detects and installs drivers off of the amd website yesterday and still nothing. Am I supposed to delete my drivers before hand and then go back and download?

After your suggestion my current settings on Afterburner are:
Power limit: +40
Temp Limit (cant adjust due to it being stuck): +94
Core Clock: 1040
Memory Clock: 1500

do those seem okay?

this didnt work either

Sorry, forgot to say other MSI AB settings to defaults.

My R9 290X refuses to work properly at lower frequencies and temperatures than default ones.

For instance when I play with cold GPU I have plenty of stutters. Once GPU heats up to 80C, everything changes.

You should go to the MSI web site and download the latest bios, if you don't know how to flash the bios: https://youtu.be/LRyFMf0D9Lc

When you use Live Update it uninstalls and installs the drivers you select. Make sure to do a complete gpu driver uninstall with amd uninstaller:http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Clean-Uninstall-Utility.aspx
It will stop driver files from being stacked up.

I just did this and am still having the same problems:/.

after reverting to default settings which were the above settings i posted my computer is still going black constantly.

1. R9 x9xx GPU require a lot of power. So make sure if your PSU is 700+W 80+ grade and delivers that power.
2. R9 x9xx GPU generates a lot of heat. Working temperatures are around 80C. My R9 290x stutters unless it is heat beyond 77C.
3. Check if heat is being ventilated out to prevent heating beyond 95. Although the GPU is designed to stand up to 105C, it throttles at 94-95C which causes freezes and black screens.
4. Disable ULPS with MSI AB. It also can cause some problems with power.
5. I am not sure, but I suspect AMD HD audio drains power whether it works or not, but if you use other audio disable it.
6. If none of above or all together doesn't help, test VRAM. If VRAM is faulty - RMA.
