All the comments about previous naming conventions and comparisons to Nvidia naming scheme are interesting, but I look at this a completely different way: The current XX00 naming only allows for one additional "modifier" to the name, specifically the last two digits are really a single modifier such as XX10, XX20, XX30,.. and so on. The X0X0 convention allows for 2 modifiers in the name such as X1X0, X1X1, X1X2, X2X2... and so on. This allows them to distinguish performance or features without requiring an alphabet soup of additional characters as a suffix to the name. This may not be what they had in mind, but my brain likes to organize things in this way.
