So I installed Catalyst 10.7 (ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run) on Ubuntu 10.4 (Radeon Mobility HD3400), and the installation process completed without error (nothing nasty in /usr/share/ati), but the Catalyst Control Center still reports "Catalyst Version: 10.6" and "Driver Packaging Version: 8.723-100406a-099494C-ATI" even though it should reflect 8.753, per the install script output. Has anyone else seen this to be the case?

[citation][nom]tony singh[/nom]After 10.3 , all crap is cumming out of ati, luks like sm 1 is not working srsly....[/citation]
or typing...

[citation][nom]ionut19[/nom]You are right in a way about the improvement of other applications but as for gaming i do not know what to say because from my experience with ATI and Nvidia drivers there is always an improvement over time. Only now that nvidia released drivers that increased the speed by a considerable margin, especially with the last 2 driver updates(sli and non sli). That's the thing that impacted me when ati drivers did not improve by a lot with the last driver(10.7) release(crossfire and/or no crossfire).[/citation]
That's a stupid expectation, considering the ATI driver team releases an update every month. That leaves an estimated 2-3 weeks of actual development time. And that's also not mentioning their typical perf improvements every other driver release. You're just using this as an excuse to flame. But if you didn't find it here, you'd find it somewhere else.

[citation][nom]Stormy Dragon[/nom]why did i bought ATI?Because you wanted a video board that's not going to die in six months?[/citation]
Heh, my x800, x1600, HD2600 and HD2900, my HD3870, and now my 4850X2 are all still running strong. I've had two Nvidia cards in that time-line; both died.

I like how Tom's leaves out the performance improvements even though there are some included in the release notes.....

Performance Improvements
The following performance gains are noticed with this release of Catalyst™ 10.7:

For those complaining about ATi drivers not improving performance as much as Nvidia right now: You do realize that Nvidia's fermi cards are much newer than the Radeon 5000 cards. They are at different points of their life cycle. Even then, I still gained performance on my 5870's.

I also found another improvement. Now, when I adjust the ATi Overdrive settings to OC my cards while using 2 monitors, I do not get flickering with idle clock speeds. The memory clocks no longer drops to about 1/4 of what they are when gaming.

I also have higher vantage scores at lower clocks speeds than I had before. The new drivers seem to be doing a good job.

For anyone who was expecting AA support for StarCraft 2 with this latest Catalyst release, unfortunately you're out of luck. Here's ATI's response:

"AMD constantly strives to deliver great gaming experiences for our customers and the upcoming launch of Starcraft II is no exception. Blizzard’s focus on incredible game play for all, means that gamers using ATI Radeon(tm) products can enjoy smooth HD gameplay and industry leading image quality with our current generation of ATI Radeon products as well as many of our past generation cards.
In discussions during the development of StarCraft II, Blizzard indicated that they would not initially include options to set levels of in-game anti-aliasing (“AA”). This meant that support for AA within StarCraft II would only be made possible by including it in the driver, an approach that could significantly impact performance.
Some third party reviews of the Starcraft II beta echo our concerns that AA can cause gameplay impairment. In these reviews, the third parties found that 4x AA led to a reduction in fps rendering at lower screen resolutions, which only became more noticeable at larger resolutions.
After evaluating our options, our engineering team opted not to provide AA support for StarCraft II within the Catalyst Control Center, even though the competition has included AA support in their driver at launch.
We are committed to making AA perform at an acceptable level before we release it to our customers. We will continue to work with Blizzard on this matter and hope to offer our customers an acceptable AA solution at a later date."

It's true about low AA performance however, the frame rates on Nvidia's cards are basically cut in half with 4x AA enabled. If the same is happening to ATI's lineup, I can see why they're reluctant to release driver level AA support at this time, given their lower overall performance in comparison to Nvidia's lineup.

To me, over time either graphics company have hit or miss drivers in their history. It does seem silly at this point in computing that such unreliable drivers are released to an unwitting public.

I do understand that they can't possibly test every type of configuration, and it must be quite a challenge to keep up with all the various hardware and software changes coming out daily. But when so many users are having bad experiences, one has to wonder just how much quality assurance is being conducted before release.

I can recall any number of times that ATI released driver updates to improve performance. My point is that I'm not sure there is a significant difference between the usability of drivers from either company. I'd say personal preference colors some people's opinions about who has "better" drivers.

[citation][nom]sargentchimera[/nom]I hope these are better than the horrible 10.5 and 10.6, I've been useing 10.4 for awhile now and I really hope these do the trick![/citation]

What are you smoking man? 10.6 were great. So far these 10.7 work OK.

Initial install attempt: BSOD. DOH! Rebooted, no ATI drivers detected so I ran driver sweeper, cleaned it all out, rebooted and installed, rebooted again but CCC didn't load, rebooted again and it's been fine since.

Except STALKER: CoP seems to lag a lot more

And there's some check boxes in the 3D settings that are gone.

[citation][nom]dragonsqrrl[/nom]For anyone who was expecting AA support for StarCraft 2 with this latest Catalyst release... snip[/citation]

That's interesting! However, considering my GPUs run at about 30% usage... they should really just include it and let people experiencing bad framerates disable it...

[citation][nom]ohim[/nom]Maybe because they got it right with performance from the first time and there`s nothing else to improve ? and for nvidia you get improvements for sli etc not for 1 card. And i find it pretty interesting that they take time to tweak the drivers for other aplications too other than video games.[/citation]

Some of their drivers have given damn nice performance increases for F@H...

Has anyone noticed a high pitched squealing coming from their graphics card after updating drivers?
I previously had 10.4, then tried .5 and .6 both of which ended up making a high pitched noise when playing a full screen game.
Friggen annoying!

Still having a problem installing drivers - There was a problem installing this hardware: ATI Radeon HD 4650, an error occured during the installation of the device, the device cannot find the file specified. Tried downloading fixes and nothing seems to work. Should I uninstall them all and try from ground zero? Grr.

thanks for the heads up tom's... it would be awesome if you guys benched driver releases... they typically release every month or two... just a couple of synthetics and one or two games would do... you wouldn't even have to write any comments... we would

When i try to play a game there black lines that go up and down the screen but when i roll back to my previous driver it works fine
