AMD Reveals Single Link DisplayPort-to-DVI

I've had dual DVI from one DVI port on my Dell Optiplex 760 in my office for the last 2 years. I'm not seeing what the big deal is?

Stop getting hung up on semantics people and appreciate the fact that they are trying to make this cheaper for the masses. Unless of course you enjoy the days of $1 per MB of RAM and $1 per GB of HDD space then qq away

Wouldn't you actually need only 1 display port adapter because the first two monitors would use DVI which is natively supported on the card as Eyefinity requires 2 DVI and 1 Display port. So from what I understand you would either get a 3rd monitor that has build in Display port or a 3rd monitor with DVI support (cheaper) and said Display port adapter.

Considering that you can get HDMI cables for less than $10, $30 for a dongle is pretty expensive. Either way its better than nothing I guess.

It's better than the active DP to DVI adapters that run the better part of $100! But I do have to agree that they really should bundle one since eyefinity is one of the major features of the HD5000 series.

3600x1200 (3x1 portrait) on a single card plug n play without pointless active adaptor, yes man thats what i'm talking about.

Now, I think the 5870 2GB ver. is still the way to go...

That's cool that they're doing that, but I just bought a Displayport > VGA adapter, which is essentially the same idea, supporting a res of up to 1920x1200. $30 as well. Only issue with that is that VGA is getting old. But monitors still support it.

So what does the "Single Link" part of it mean? Just that it will be limited to 1920x1200?

Well a DP -> VGA adapter costs round abouts $25 so $30 for DP -> DVI isn't too bad. Personally I wish they would just get rid of DP entirely on these cards and have either DVIx3 or DVIx2+VGA.

The big question though is how badly does someone need 3 monitors? I know that even on my OCed 5850, playing some older games at 3000x1000 does bring the frame rates down a noticeable amount. Throwing on another 50% load by going to 3 monitors would probably not work too well at all. Not to mention the fact that it's pretty exhausting to look at 3 screens with all the head movement required.

I would love to have 3 monitors in 3600 X 1200. Even with this DisplayPort-to-DVI part lowering the displays cost required I cant afford Eyefinity. Good to know tho the price is coming down.

$30 is acceptable for an adapter, now if AMD can just now drop the price of the 5800 series cards to an appropriate level.

This certainly makes the prospect of Eyefinity more appealing. Thirty dollars is a bit much, but it's better than buying brand new monitors just to get DisplayPort.

$30 isn't too bad. A good solution over the active adapter. Also, to those that say you need three adapters, you only need one for a regular eyefinity set up since you can use dvi and hdmi for the other two screens.

Also, it doesn't have to cost too much for eyefinity. You can get cheaper 22 inch and 21.5 inch monitors for $150 each. Sometimes you can get 19 inch monitors for close to $100 (or as low as $80 during sales). I used some old 19 inch 1280 x 1024 dell monitors for 3840 x 1024. You can find 19 inch monitors for cheap on craigslist. Your PC doesn't have to be crazy good for triple 19 inch or 20 inch although you do need at least a GTX 460 and a quad core.

i've been selling these on ebay (acquired from an undisclosed surplus) for months. DP -> DVI...are these really new? maybe i'm missing something. is this just saying that Eyefinity will work with these now and it, previously, wouldn't?
