AMD ruined my PC.

Hi,

I have ATI HD 5550, drivers with CD packed to it 6 years ago, worked all OK for 6 years, except when I ticked HW acceleration in firefox. So I decided to update my drivers, downloaded the radeon-crimson-relive-17.1.1-minimalsetup-170118_web and it was not able to install the proper drivers at all. it said drivers are installed OK, but after restart windows told me there are no drivers or are broken, resolution 640x480. I tried to delete them, restart, reinstall many times. Nothing worked. Th en I tried to choose newest drivers manually amd-catalyst-15.7.1-with-dotnet45-win7-64bit and also, this did not work properly. Resolution and graphic appeared as OK, but whenever I tried to open anything, the program stopped to work. eg; VLC, VMware, or even a PNG image. Then I put the original AMD CD into the drive, uninstall, install again, and again, problem persist. Used also amdcleanuputility. THen error api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing. Also, somewhere in between, on newest AMD drivers I was not able to hear an sound via HDMI to TV cable (before all OK, after installing 6 years old CD drivers again all OK)

Therefore I am sure, AMD drivers (auto or manual, both) damaged my PC. If I would not want to update the driver, everything would go on (except FF HD acceleration perhaps)

So I am asking, what can I do now? I would love to sue AMD for crappy drivers, as I have no idea how such coders could get any job, if they mess up the drivers so badly.

AS I wasted 12 hours of my life with this, I think AMD should pay for their crappy product. Of course I regret this AMD card and will stick to INTEL, for REALLY OBVIOUS reasons.

Now I have to reinstall the WIN7 and that suck, backing up things, just too much time wasted thanks to AMD drivers! I'm already ready to reinstall, backed all up and so on, but still, what if the error comes back? I wont be able to use any driver newer than 6 year old? I dont have all the time of the Earth to test all the drivers. Simply, it's pretty shit service from AMD (also, maybe intel has same issues, i dont know, so far I have problem with this HD5550, as I have no other cards)

Firstly, the first driver does not appear to support your card - per this page, the last driver was 16.2.1. Installing an unsupported driver often does strange things. Where did AMD tell you this was the right driver?

15.7.1 should have worked, but it's possible that installing an unsupported driver broke something - downgrading is generally not well supported without a complete uninstall of the drivers.

I'd suggest running this, then trying either 15.7.1 or 16.2.1.

and I downloaded it via
Automatically Detect and Install Your Driver
I tried that utility to clean all, it did work but...
After i installed the drivers from CD, there is one problem I can not fix with anything yet - COM Surrogate.. cant open images, but can open in mspaint. So something in WIN7 after installing wrong drivers went wrong.
I guess clean WIN7 will do the best, but just wanted to try to fix it.
I can try 15.7.1 or even 16.2.1 and test it with that, maybe it will give something new instead of 6 years old driver..

EDIT: strange, but i cant install anything anymore. when I open that 15.7.1 to install it, after I choose custom install, and click next, it crashes. I dont have any idea, why is MAD spamming the installation with raprt or anythnig like that. thats why i dont want to intall it express way, but can try and later on uninstall the raprt..

as soon as i clean the drivers, i am able to open any image. so the COM Surrcharge must be something with AMD drivers. just my guess... so with drivers the COM error coems up, without them doesnt, strange..

OK another update:
Installed 15.7.1 successfully, I can open images witout COM error, but new error: I can not play SOUND via HDMI again. Screen is OK, but no sound. When I go to Sounds in control panel, and click TEST the HDMI TV, it says, its used by another aplication, which is bullshit, as WIN just started and PC cant even play error sound on TV via HDMI.
Sound with USB nuforce speakers work well.
When I go back to 2010 drivers, all is OK again.
So 15.7.1 is not compatible with my HD5550 or am I doing something wrong?

i had to rollback AUDIO only drives to 2009.
AMD, goodbye, i will not buy a single chip from you anymore. and I liked AMD more than intel, just because it was smaller corporation. this is simply crazy, i simply wanted to doubleclick the SUPPORTED drivers and install it from OFFICIAL source, but it was a bad idea...

Thank you Someone Somewhere, at least I have graphic 15.7.1 now I think, perhaps it will work better than the 2010 old one
