What are your thoughts on it?? This is crazy sounding at $199. RX 480 Vs. GTX 970, what is the better card? I ask because my card now is a 970, but if this is going to offer 980 like levels of performance I might just sell this to get this 480!

Games at 1080p are beginning to require a GTX 970 to be maxed out and not just because of the 4GB vram requirement. There are so many effects being added now.

I think the RX 480 (does 'X' stand for 10 and they have skipped 9?) will be a good option for 1440p gamers.

But it's still worth considering for those who want to play at 1080p with maxed out settings and higher frame rates - owners of a 120Hz monitor perhaps.

At 199$ it will have an appeal to a wide market for sure. But if you have the cash to spend on a GTX 1070, well I don't think the RX 480 is meant to be in direct competition with that. It is not as powerful and it costs a lot less from what we know so far.

Nvidea will respond with the GTX 1050 and GTX 1060, then it...

We honestly won't know for sure until reviewers get their hands on cards and publish proper reviews. It wouldn't be the first time a company has overstated their performance at a product launch!

Having said that, all indications is that the 480 will be around the performance of a 970 and that the base (4GB non OC'd) versions will be ~$200, once they can meet demand. That's for sure a great value card if that all turns out to be true.

Having said that, if I was in your shoes there's no way I'd be selling a perfectly good, working card, to get one that performs the same, unless I could make a bunch of money. The time and hassle of a sidegrade doesn't seem worth it to me unless you get something out of it. The 970 is still a good card.

Just to clarify, they've ditched the "R9" naming scheme for this release. It's just an RX 480. Whether we'll get an RX 480X is anyone's guess. If it turns out this is a partially disabled GPU then a later fully-enabled upgrade is certainly possible. But if this turns out to be a fully enabled part, then it's difficult to imagine AMD would have a slightly higher tier part to release any time soon.

Crazy? I don't think so. In fact it is quite expected that we will get such performance for sub $250 this time around. The good news? More performance now available at much cheaper price. But still i'm not aure if that's going to be enough to keep up with future more demanding title. I mean look at 960. That is almost 680 performance which is 2012 flagship performance for $500. So how does 960 fare when they come out? 😀

Better value? That's a big call. The 1070 is almost double the price, and that's if the price actually hits the MSRP, which may well not happen for some time given that Nvidia is intent on charging $450 for their stock cooler. We'll see when benchmarks are released, but I don't expect a 1070 to be getting anywhere near double the performance of a 480. If the 8GB VRAM is important to you, there will be 8GB variants of the 480, still for way less money than the 1070.

I'm not ragging on Nvidia. There's always been a law of diminishing returns with high end gear, where the more money you sink on higher and higher end gear the smaller the performance gains get. And it's pretty clear that the 1070 is a better card, but better value is a tough argument to make IMHO.
