AMD to ship Athlon 64 3400+ in August

Personally, I mostly care about the frequency the Athlon 64 3400+ will have, instead of its release date. After checking the second link you gave, it seems that the 3400+ will be clocked at 2GHz, which I find rather dissapointing. I doubt that this chip will be able to compete with the Prescott 3.4GHz.

Only time will show for sure though ... !!!

i think this could be a good chance for AMD to launch a CPU and to make itc available in a very short time, "paper launches" aren't a great deal in the "back-to-school" period 😉

urgh. I was hoping for 2.4Ghz or so - hell, I was expecting ~2.2Ghz... I can't see it's IPC being a great deal higher than a Barton, as it's fundamentally the same chip (in 32-bit anyway...)..

Maybe my pessimism is totally unwarranted - I sincerly hope it blows everything away at launch - but I think this will flop, bigtime (on techie review sites like THG anyway - AMD 'official' benchmarks will doubtless show it as an awesome performer)

$hit Happens. I just wish it would happen to someone else for a change.

Sure. They'll compile with a fully-capable 64-bit compiler on the A64, and use GCC on the P4 and disable automatic threading options and SSE2.
