AMD vs Intel

I am in the process of upgrading my current system and I need to know which processor to go with based on my tasks I perform.
I am comparing the AMD 64 X2 3800+ vs. Intel Pentium D 920 2.8Ghz.

I do alot of work with video editing, photoshop, CD/DVD burning, and 3D application.
I play a few games like Civilization 4, and Battlefield 2.

I currently have a pentium 4 3.0 prescott with 1GB kingston hyper x ram. I would like to keep the ram and add another GB to that.

Which processor is better for the type of work I do as well as gaming?
also what motherboards would you suggest? I was considering a motherboard with built in video but I dont want to constrain the gaming I do either.

umm why upgrade? lol

ive got a p4 3.2 prescott myself with 1 gig of corsair ram and a 6800gt.
i wouldnt update atm even if i had the money lol. i just dont think its
worth it atm.

btw. i dont think you could/should use the old ram together with new ram
and doesnt amd need different ram? (dunno)

fyi, im a 3dmax user myself. onboard video is a sacrelige 😛 (not just for gaming)

edit: also my p4 is a s478, so if i were to upgrade id have to buy a new board
and gfx card (pci-e) aswell.

AMD 3800+ would be your choice because -besides relatively better gamming experience- you won't be able to put your DDR s for Pentium D 920. It requires DDR2.

imho I would stick with what you have for the moment.....keep saving your money and get something after the new generation of AMD procs have come out.....if money is burning a hole in your pocket and you want to keep the current ram then get the X2......and motherboard to match
 
wait for m2 and you could use your old ram and dude i would sell your old system now on ebay but keep the ram you should get a good price for it before m2 and conroe come out!

I tried upgrading the video card and it wouldnt work with my TV tuner installed. the video kept crashing to the basic 8bit video. thats what all started this desire to upgrade to a new system. Mine seems so slow when it comes to video editing with power producer or pinnacle studio. Maybe I should just upgrade the RAM, do you think that would make a significant difference in speed?

Your current system is not fast enough for you. 3ghz is still good. Add 1Gb on your ram and a decent graphics card and viola!

If you're keeping your ram then you can only go Intel like the 920 or 930.

I have an Abit IC-7 motherboard, Hauppage Wintv-PVR250BTV, and wanted to install say a PNY geforce 6600. but the graphics kept crashing. Any ideas on that situation? if I could get that to work I wouldnt consider an upgrade at this point.

ok then here is what I suggest: I wouldn't recommend buying a 939 now. You'll feel horrible when you see how their prices drop within a few weeks. On top of it you won't be able to use your DDR RAM in your future upgrades. I would buy a Presler. This way you'll have an easier time upgrading to AM2 - Conroe . You can sell your Presler and mobo (better 975x) at a good price cuase they'll keep their value for the next year.

Sounds like a BIOS or driver problem, although it might have just been a bum card. You need to make sure all your settings are right in the bios (for the shared system memory and AGP x2 or x8 or whatever you got). Also you need to make sure you follow the instructions EXACTLY when changing cards. This usually includes removing all the drivers for your old card before you remove it. Then swapping the cards and letting winblows detect it then install the drivers per instructions. Winblows is very picky about this kinda stuff and sometimes the registry gets FUBARed. I've had to reformat C: more than once to complete a graphics card upgrade.

on another note to all reading this post....
I have been reading some reviews about intel vs. amd and some are saying intel is more application based while amd is for gaming. I dont want to buy amd and be disappointed with the applications I use, such as the pinnacle studio.

Intel what they do I never heard of them.
Is that a company which makes radiant ovens for FREEEDOM FRIES?

AMD at least any Dual Core (only), now or in the near future.

Choices socket 939 or wait for AM2 (new 940 with DDR 2).

Forget Untel, the P4 is or so much hyped Conroe is a waste of electrons only not mentioning the load of beloved patriot $OLLAR!
The architecture of AMD X2 is superior over InHell.

Guess why Spilbergs studios and other movie makers are using Opterons?

Because only AMD makes kosher processors!

It sounds so likely that it's your tuner drivers not getting along with newer vid card drivers. I assume you called tech support at happauge? Cuz it sounds like you might buy a new mobo, proc, vid card, and RAM and STILL not have a functional system. That would sure suck, since that tuner card is only worth like $110US. This is one of those times it'd be great to have some parts that you know for a fact are good that you can swap in and out. Of course if you are using the vid card incompatibility with your tuner card as a paper tiger to rationalize spending the money, then by all means deceive yourself and get some new pimp stuff.

replaced the mobo/cpu.
imho your cpu is more then enough to play games and work in video editing.
what you need is a good gfx card and enough ram.

id consider going through the hassel again if u still have that vid card u tried, but
search the error on the tv tuner, not the vid card. get new drivers for the tv
tuner or if not possible check the manufactors website for possible compability
problems with newer vid cards. if nothing helps call them up and yell at them lol
or consider buying a newer tv tuner since they are a lot cheaper then a new
mobo/cpu.

if you're still going to buy a new cpu, then id recommend an intel tbh and
im not a fanboy of either side, but i have never heard anyone recommend
an AMD cpu for the purpose of vid-edititng or 3d software.
the prescott you and I own perform better in 3d application then an amd at
that point (when it came out).
it all comes down to personal preference since both chips are good, so if
you're happy with ur intel, then by all means get another one of them :)

btw. video editing likes fast HDD's, so if u wanna spend money, maybe
consider a fast drive like a WD raptor (10000 revs per minute) or
of course up the ram to 2 gigs. never hurts to be able to have big video
file chunks in ur ram lol

What he said! AMD's are notoriously crap when compared to Intel for video editing. Tom's did a stress test a while ago between one of the Intel dual core Extreme CPU's and an AMD FX CPU and the Intel performed much better in the video editing stakes.

I'd suggest sorting out your problems with the TV tuner though, rather than buying a whole new PC just for this one issue.

do i understand you right, you dont have ANY gfx card in your system?

then id see why you think its to slow for you. you really need to solve the
issue with the tv-tuner and get a gfx card like the 6600 or 6800 and your
performance would jump :)
 
I had issuses with having a newer video card and tv tuner installed. I disabled some features I dont use in the BIOS, installed a video card I bought over the weekend and now it all is working perfectly. I chose the BFG 6200OC 256, its a nice card, good graphics too. Now I'm jsut waiting for the AMD processor and motherboard so I can upgrade.
 
Well I did it, I finally got my mind made up and purchased a dual core setup

AMD 64 X2 3800
Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939

talk about awesome, this board can have the bios updated within Windows. Also has great overclocking features too.

the prescott processor I had before would run between 60 and 70 degrees all the time, the new AMD processor runs around 30 degrees and 34 when stressed.

AMD is deffinitely the way to go 😀
