I am wanting to upgrade my current graphics card and I am wondering what would be a good choice. Now that Nvidia has come out with the 900 series I was considering getting one of those cards. However, I saw that AMD has just come out with a 8GB version of the r9 290x. I am just wondering what might be the better choice?

Solution
The 8GB version of the 290x will not be of benefit really in gaming compared to a 4GB. It is mostly helpful for people who do rendering. I would go with the GTX970 because it has basically the best performance for the price, and is much much more power efficient than any AMD card.

Solution
The amount of vram is a performance issue, not a functional issue.
It appears to be mostly marketing except for such moded games such as skyrim.
Here is a older comparison that shows little difference in performance between 2gb and 4gb.

I like the newer tech of the GTX9xx cards.

So 4GB would be good for any modern application essentially? Also would the 980 be a good choice?

It would help to know your current card, power supply, and what you use it for.
